Not only do Prison Visitors want to extend to those imprisoned something of the emotional and intellectual enrichment experienced through friends. They particularly try to encourage the development of a constructive use of a prison sentence whereby (inmates) gain both a sense of belonging to the community and the realzation that they themselves have the ability to contribute to society's wellbeing. Over the past couple of years, the notion of the ‘social enterprise’ has begun to emerge, based on the idea that businesses can gain significant benefit by embracing inside their own organizations the social networking concepts that have revolutionized the way the developed world communicates and shares information. The aim of this report is to demystify the concept of the social enterprise. It provides concrete definitions; offers a detailed explanation of what we believe are the components of the social enterprise, and how they align and differ; identifies where the opportunities might exist and where the pitfalls are located; and discusses how the industry landscape is evolving to take advantage of this trend – in particular by reviewing how various technology concepts may interlock to create the social-enterprise model. The report also takes a look at how some leading-edge adopters are taking the social enterprise to heart, and assesses the advantages and lessons learned.
