🚀 **Just Published!** 🚀 I’m excited to share my latest research paper titled **"Modeling Life Expectancy and Cost Effectiveness for UHPC Bridge Retrofitting Techniques"** published in the journal Advances in Bridge Engineering. In this paper, we explore how Ultra-High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) can be a game-changer for bridge maintenance and rehabilitation. 🌉✨ A major contribution of this paper is the life expectancy model for UHPC concrete. This is a matter of the quandary because life expectancy for concrete structures has been quantified by evaluating the corrosion or predicting the bridge condition index. The differences between the legacy Simplified Method (which appears in earlier editions of the AASHTO code) and the Stiffness Method are explained in the lecture. The Stiffness Method approach represents a paradigm shift on how reinforcement loads are calculated for internal stability design of MSE walls under operational conditions. The Stiffness Method, as the name implies, includes the tensile stiffness of the reinforcement as a key factor determining the loads developed in reinforcement layers under operational conditions. The Simplified Method is a strength-based approach which cannot distinguish between reinforcement materials falling within the same classification. The Stiffness Method has the additional benefit of being seamless across relatively extensible (geosynthetic reinforcement materials) and relatively inextensible materials (steel grids and steel strips). In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic methodology to assess how the Observational Method impacts structural safety, specifically examining changes in the probability of failure when the OM is applied. Small tip for how I make quicker H&H model updates… Right now, I’m working on a project that uses a 2-D PCSWMM model. It has: 1,200 junctions 50 MILES of conduits 121,000 2-D nodes Not surprisingly, it functions slower than I’d like… 😣 Here’s what I do to make my model updates quicker.  (Things like: adding more pipes, streams, retention basins, or refining and breaking up subcatchments.). I build the updates in a separate “blank” model that doesn’t have any of the 2-D components. Then, once I’m done building the new components, I bring them into the larger model. I don’t have to deal with a slower moving model. And I can do updates and finish QA/QC on the new bits much quicker. It might seem obvious, but it makes a big time difference and doesn’t test my patience.

How can we eliminate the "Caste System" (4 years of experience vs 25 years experience both enter at Entry Level 1, Stage D.) at Caltrans (California DOT). This "Caste System" (long-term employees are prioritized over short-term employees with great ideas) poses numerous challenges including the following: (1) A technology introduced in Virginia 20 years ago has still not been approved for use in California; (2) Minimal Single Point (SPUI) and Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDI) versus Reno/Sparks and Salt Lake City which have numerous such interchanges including Salt Lake City's impressive network of collector distributor lanes (winner of ASCE Project of the Year); and (3) poor performance (worst roads in the nation with heavy taxation versus Nevada with the 2nd best roads in the nation and light taxation). USACE seismic-related ERs and USSD Webinar on July 9, 2024 The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has recently updated three seismic-related Engineer Regulations (ER) (available in link below). These policy updates address seismic safety, functionality, operations and maintenance, post-earthquake response and repair, as well as instrumentation aspects of Civil Works (CW) projects including dams and levees. It should be noted that Engineer Manuals (EM) provide detail guidance on different topics, whereas ERs provide policy standards. These three ERs are available at https://lnkd.in/g2rHmqc8 There will be a webinar, hosted by USSD on July 9, 2024 on key updates and rationale for USACE seismic-related Engineer Regulations. Link to USSD webinar is https://lnkd.in/g5PBM2Fb ER 1110-2-103 (Strong-Motion Instruments for Monitoring and Recording Earthquake Ground Motions) provides requirements for strong motion instrumentations for dams and navigation structures. ER 1110-2-1802 (Post-Earthquake Inspections and Reporting for Civil Works Structures) provides regulation concerning verification of post-earthquake project integrity and performance. ER 1110-2-1806 (Earthquake Analysis Evaluation, and Design for Civil Works Projects) establishes minimum standards for serviceability and safety of civil works project features (including dams and levees) for specific earthquake return periods for ground motion and coincident pool elevations. It also provides requirements for aspects of seismic analysis, evaluation, and design.
