  • Determining Device Position Using Ultrawideband to Customize Surround Sound

    Technical Disclosure Commons

Traditional surround sound experiences require precise placement of speakers at positions that are optimal for audio playback. Even after a careful setup, the audio experience may suffer depending on where the user sits relative to the speakers, since there is no way to intelligently adjust the equalizers for the different speakers distributed in space without localization information about the speakers. The techniques described in this disclosure utilize ultrawideband ranging to determine the…

The techniques described in this disclosure utilize ultrawideband ranging to determine the relative position of different audio playback devices in an environment and the position of the user. A central node customizes the audio streams provided to each speaker device based on the determined position. If any of the speaker devices are moved to a different position or removed from the environment, if new speaker devices are added, or if the user’s position changes significantly to a different fixed location during playback, the central node can automatically adjust the audio stream for the new environment, without the user having to perform manual reconfiguration.

  • Security camera with angled cable attachment for increased downward-viewing angle

    Filed WO2022066287A1

This document describes a security camera with an angled cable attachment for an increased downward viewing angle. The security camera is battery-powered and can be magnetically coupled to a mounting device and electrically connected to another device via a cable. The cable has a cable attachment that, when coupled to the security camera, is angled toward a front of the security camera. This cable angle enables an increased downward tilt angle of the security camera by reducing interference of…

The security camera is battery-powered and can be magnetically coupled to a mounting device and electrically connected to another device via a cable. The cable has a cable attachment that, when coupled to the security camera, is angled toward a front of the security camera. This cable angle enables an increased downward tilt angle of the security camera by reducing interference of the cable attachment with the mounting device when the security camera is tilted downward. The security camera also has exposed contacts on a printed circuit board that connect with pins on the cable attachment.

The electronic device also includes a camera module and a sensor (500) disposed within the housing. The sensor detects a magnetic field associated with the magnet when the head assembly is coupled to the mounting device. When a user detaches the head assembly from the mounting device (e.g., to recharge the electronic device), the sensor no longer detects the magnetic field and determines the occurrence of a privacy event, which is used to deactivate the camera module to prevent unintentional recordings during the privacy event.

The development of robotics has opened new avenues for the entertainment industry. Through this project, we aim to explore one such avenue: the creation of a musical quartet of quad-rotors that "sing" musical tones by controlling their throttle with feedback. The rotation of quad-rotor propeller blades generates an acoustic tone; the fundamental frequency of this sound can be controlled by varying the speed of rotation. While typical applications in robotics would aim to minimize this sound, we look to sense and process it, using it as an input to the controller. The proposed solution involves the use of quad-rotors which are tethered to the ground using an elastic material to allow a wide range of throttles (and therefore musical tones) while keeping the robots within a constrained area. The result is a visual and auditory spectacle, demonstrating the confluence of robotic control and music.

Consumer virtual reality technology is advancing by leaps and bounds. However, efforts have been primarily focused on viewing the virtual world. To be truly immersed, people must be free to explore and interact with the environment unfettered. Unfortunately, the products that are available for home use are noticeably limited in sensation and reachable space, while those that can offer immersion are necessarily restricted to commercial spaces due to size and cost. Our team of CMU Robotics students leveraged our expertise in areas including system design, control theory, perception and planning, and bio-mechanics to solve this problem. By allowing people to walk indefinitely in a virtual world from the confines of their living room, and integrating this technology with the state of the art in visual feedback and hand controls, our system will provide a truly unparalleled immersive experience from the comfort of your own home.
