Just finished watching an enlightening CFD podcast by Kade Beck featuring Aki Runchal. I've often found myself tangled in the equations of laminar and turbulent flow, trying to decipher each term's meaning and its impact on physics. However, one crucial distinction highlighted in the podcast struck a chord with me: "A scientist is trying to understand the physics of the system. An engineer is trying to design a device that performs within certain limits given its space and budget." These words made me rethink my approach to studying CFD and Fluid Mechanics. Instead of delving too deep into every equation term, our role as engineers is to grasp enough to deliver effective solutions. The insights shared in this podcast resonate deeply with every student and engineer. Orthogonal Redundancy in context of perception sensors... To enhance reliability, an autonomous vehicle’s perception system can employ orthogonal redundancy by using multiple independent sensor modalities. For example: If the Lidar system fails (e.g., due to dust or mechanical issues), the vehicle can still rely on radar and cameras for perception. If the camera system is obstructed (e.g., by glare or dirt), Lidar and radar can compensate. By combining data from different sensors, the system can cross-validate and improve accuracy. #Typewhitepaper This document presents RCS results for three aircraft models and three other benchmark geometries obtained using WIPL-D Software. The comparison of the obtained results with the "Austin RCS Benchmark" data indicates excellent agreement and demonstrates the exceptional accuracy of RCS calculation when using WIPL-D Software. Furthermore, WIPL-D calculations are very fast even when using an affordable computer workstation and with no GPU acceleration applied. Finally, different decimations applied to aircraft geometries can further reduce the simulation times without affecting the high accuracy. https://lnkd.in/geB8NkFv via @IEEESpectrum

One of the most effective ways to improve the productivity and reduce the energy consumption of heavy vehicles is to increase payload capacity, by increasing vehicle length. This is often prevented by a loss of maneuverability, particularly for articulated vehicles... (For example, it is not possible to drive a large articulated vehicle down a small country lane to collect agricultural produce.) One way to solve this conundrum is to steer the trailer axles. But this has the knock-on effect of the additional mass and cost of the steering hardware. This paper shows that it is possible to steer carefully designed axles on articulated trailers by using the brakes, at about half the cost and half the mass of existing steering hardware, but with equal performance.
