From where I sit in the SF Bay Area, cradle of innovation for at least the last 30 years, I'm a true believer in the promise of the #AI revolution. That said, I find it fascinating to consider views on the opposing side. I'm sharing below two opinion pieces from the last two weeks suggesting that the AI revolution is fundamentally overhyped and a bubble ripe for bursting, and that AI tools are actually not useful or transformative. Contrast this with venture capitalist Kai-Fu Lee's prognostication that 50% of white collar jobs will be displaced by #AI within three years, and that OpenAI and the other cutting edge movers in the space are headed to a trillion+ dollar valuation. Which side will win out? Where will we be by 2030 in the AI race? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

"Can #DigitalTransformation trigger #DigitalMetamorphosis?" -- this was the question I posed to these industry leaders on the final CXO panel at the Apex Assembly in Dallas last week. Great insights shared in response including a reference to #caterpillars and #butterflies .. Read on .. The title of this session was "Digital Metamorphosis - Accelerating Corporate Transformation" moderated by Walt Carter who started the session with a discussion around the term "metamorphosis" with this panel of fine industry leaders: David L. Roberts from Cicis Pizza Neelima Annam from Carelon Subash Anbu, NACD.DC from Bemis Company, Inc. John Arroyo from Citi This prompted me to look up the definitions of both terms [see below] Transformation -- a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance. Metamorphosis -- a change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one, by natural or supernatural means. Here are my takeaways from the discussion that ensued: Digital Transformation entails steps that enterprises can take proactively and execute on Digital Metamorphosis is something that could happen organically based on various triggers including the steps taken during Digital Transformation The natural phenomenon of caterpillar to butterfly was brought up in this context. Carter emphasized that this is not necessarily the right metaphor because the target state of the transformation is well known and predetermined -- caterpillars become butterflies. Enterprises going through the Digital Transformation journey cannot necessarily predict where they will land. And thus, just like one cannot predict the target state of the Digital Transformation, Digital Metamorphosis is not guaranteed either -- it is a desirable outcome for sure. Barnard College's academic technology team developed an AI literacy framework to guide the work of faculty and students. The framework is a series of progressive levels, similar to Bloom's Taxonomy: -Understand AI -Use and Apply AI -Analyze and Evaluate AI -Create AI In my opinion, the first three domains represent the essential areas of AI literacy for students at all levels. The final domain ideally involves computer programming, but it could be argued that creating a GPT, or a chatbot using an app, allows the creation of AI to be increasingly accessible to all students. https://lnkd.in/esbPFxda

Smaller and more informed (#RAG/LORA) models are faster and more useful in business practice. You shouldn't treat #LLM's as a general purpose silver bullet or you will have never create a product of any value. Always pick a composite of the right model and data for the problem. This three point strategy (Model, #Data, Problem) will help you create better results for you and your consumers. Don't be afraid to chain results together to generate a larger encompassing solution.

I recently came across a Facebook post from a small restaurant chain in the Bay Area that piqued my interest. The chain's owner has recognized the strategic value of AI in their operations. Cost-effective and accessible AI solutions for small-scale industries hold great promise. In this instance, the ability to effectively handle 47 calls during peak hours while achieving a favorable return on investment represents a significant success. Additionally, ensuring an excellent customer experience for the diverse population served is of paramount importance in this scenario. #ai #aiml #genai

A bill pending in the California Senate that would essentially make many start-ups, open source projects as well as some research illegal in California and force it to move to other states. We need to stop this nonsense. Usually I don't post about politics as issues are often nuanced, complex and hard to fully address in a short post. This is an exception. The bill has zero benefit for anyone, except maybe very large tech companies that can use it to crush stat-ups. And it doesn't mitigate any potential downside of AI. However it would kill many open source efforts. It would stop some research. And it would force start-ups to do their model development in other states (or other countries).
