Isabel Wilkerson writes, “We are responsible for our own ignorance or, with time and openhearted enlightenment, our own wisdom.” We can best honor the spirit of the Juneteenth holiday, which commemorates the day in 1865 in which the last of formerly enslaved Americans were formally freed, by engaging in honest reflection. We can reflect on how slavery cost humanity all the talent, creativity, and groundbreaking discoveries that more than 15 million enslaved Americans could have offered. We can reflect on America’s undeniable progress toward becoming a more inclusive, equitable, and just society. And we can acknowledge there’s much work left for our country to do to achieve full racial justice and equality. So let’s celebrate Juneteenth in Philadelphia and throughout the country with our hearts and minds open. Let’s work together to ensure that all Americans are free and empowered to live out their dreams and reach their potential. #juneteenth #happyjuneteenth #juneteenthcelebration #juneteenthphila #BlackHistory

1moSo well said!!! We somehow don’t recognize that we all lose when we lose talent and expression and opportunity for all!! And we live in ignorance. And it costs us all so much!!! And lately our politics speaks of immigration as such threat while financial reports speak to the dire need for the economic support that a vibrant immigrant community brings. Welcome to the other and opportunity for all.
