The Call from an unknown number in March 2020 A call came through from a number I didn't know and the gentleman introduced himself by saying 'Muri sei Kule'--that in our language depictis familiarity, respect and relation- in English translating to 'How are you uncle?' He then said his name and I remembered that we had not dealt with each other before. That he had my number was a good sign and that he called was another sign that he was on to something- and I bet someone had referred him to me- this I didn't ask him. Reason for the Call: A start-up, in the #EV space, focusing on 3-wheeler #electric tricycles, that he worked for, was facing a few challenges in getting their applications/paperwork considered or processed in time from certain Gvt departments-meaning Gvt ministries & agencies. He believed that I could help them expedite the process and help unlock some of the closed doors- he had researched about my previous professional life. Questions for Him I asked him 4 questions to appreciate the issues at hand; the first was what was the start-up's area of focus-- it was offering first mile, last mile #electric mobility to #rural communities with a pointed focus on women as the principal beneficiaries of this service. Knowing the transport challenges in rural areas & the burden that women bear in moving from point to point, and the menial jobs that they endure daily- carrying firewood, fetching water from wells kilometres away and walking punishing distances going to and from clinics with babies strapped on their backs-- this was a no brainer- I loved it. The 2nd & 3rd questions were; whom did you talk to in these Gvt departments and what documents did you share with them. The rationale for these 2 questions was to understand the level at which the issues were pitched-- low, high or high enough to warrant a follow-up or we start afresh and also to check on whether the documents shared adequately covered the strategic issues to deserve a response from the authorities. And from our conversation, the pitching was at the correct levels and the issues strategic enough, albeit with hyperbole here and there- not fatal enough to warrant a no response. The 4th question was directed at the start-up; what do you think explains the silence from the authorities considering that this has been months in the works and visits have been made to their offices? He was blank and explained that that explained why he had called me.
