💡 Did you know that the presence of EU institutions in Brussels contributes around 25% of regional revenues and almost 20% of employment in the Brussels-Capital Region? This includes the Council of the European Union, currently presided over by #Belgium #EU2024BE.     As part of our Connecting #Brussels with #SiliconValley video series, meet with Gerard de Graaf, Head of the European Union office in San Francisco, who explains his mission as the #EU’s diplomatic outpost to the United States in #California.   Their office, opened in September 2022, serves as a central point for dialogue and cooperation between European and American tech stakeholders and works to advocate for European culture, values, and policies in the region.   Gerard emphasizes that the "European Union is also a technology superpower and has paved the way for new digital regulations, such as: 🔷 The General Data Protection Regulation (#GDPR). 🔷 The Digital Services Act (#DSA). 🔷 The Digital Markets Act (#DMA). 🔷 The EU AI Act."   When California implemented a law similar to the GDPR called the California Consumer Privacy Act (#CCPA), it was swiftly followed by 13 other states. Gerard calls this the "California Effect". 🤝 California and the European Union are working hand in hand to lead the charge in #tech innovation and user protection. We are concerned about #regulations, both national and European, that could limit our innovative potential. We believe that the ability to #innovate in the digital sector is essential for economic growth and competitiveness in #Europe. Finding the right balance between regulation and innovation is a primary issue. In this regard, we were delighted to be part of the Mouvement des Entreprises de France > Paris Public Affairs Commission this morning. The upcoming European elections represent a real opportunity for the digital industry to share its concerns and challenges. Professional associations, such as Agoria, AMETIC and Mouvement des Entreprises de France, are precious vectors to engage in discussions with leading figures and governments. We all need to share, explain and convince the members of future parliaments of the specificities and the potential of our industry. Digital technologies are profoundly changing our societies. Europe must unleash and support innovative and entrepreneurial projects to ensure competitiveness, economic growth and #digitalsovereignty. The heated discussions on the European #AIAct are a perfect example of the need to find the right balance between protecting individual freedoms, copyrights... and enabling our industry to be a world leader. 🌐 We had a high-level meeting today with Věra Jourová, Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Values and Transparency. Our colleagues, Anca Dragoi and Costel Bercus, went to the European Commission Representation in Bucharest for an extensive dialogue on how the EU can really harness its innovation potential for digitalization. 🤝🏻 Our civic tech sector recommendations should be integrated into future EU strategies for innovation and digitalization.
