As avid supporters of music, it's crucial to engage in conversations that challenge the status quo and advocate for the preservation of authenticity and artist livelihoods. Streaming platforms have undeniably revolutionized how we consume music, offering unparalleled access to an extensive catalog at our fingertips. However, beneath the veneer of convenience lies a myriad of issues that warrant our attention and action. Firstly, the commodification of music on streaming platforms devalues the artistry and efforts of musicians. With minuscule royalties paid per stream, many artists struggle to make ends meet despite their immense talent and dedication. This economic model not only disincentivizes creativity but also perpetuates an unfair system where only a select few reap substantial rewards. Furthermore, the algorithm-driven nature of streaming platforms perpetuates a cycle of homogenized content consumption, often at the expense of diversity and discovery. While recommendations based on our listening habits may seem convenient, they inadvertently limit exposure to new and lesser-known artists, stifling innovation and creativity within the industry. Moreover, the shift towards digital streaming marginalizes physical formats such as vinyl records and CDs, jeopardizing their cultural significance and diminishing the tactile experience of music appreciation. The act of browsing through record stores, holding an album in your hands, and experiencing the artwork firsthand is an irreplaceable aspect of the music journey that streaming fails to replicate. In light of these concerns, we urge fellow music enthusiasts to reevaluate their relationship with streaming platforms and consider alternative avenues for supporting artists and preserving the integrity of music. Whether it's purchasing physical copies, attending live performances, or exploring independent platforms that prioritize fair compensation for musicians, every action counts towards creating a sustainable and equitable ecosystem for music. Let's come together to celebrate the richness and diversity of music while advocating for a future where artists are valued, creativity flourishes, and the art form thrives. It’s International Music Therapy Week! It’s a great time to educate and advocate for the healing power of music therapy. One of the things I get a lot is… “You’re a music therapist? That’s so cool to have a job to make people happy.” Well, that is not my job. Far from it. My job is to create music experiences to ‘help’ people work towards a goal or a need. Imagine if I walked into a hospital room in the oncology unit to work with someone who just got results from a biopsy and just found out that they have cancer. My job is certainly not to make them happy. I’m a firm believer that sometimes we need ‘melancholy’ music. Sometimes we just need to feel what we are feeling inside. We need to simply be in that space. We need to honor it, process it, figure it out. Music creates connection and presence, and that can be powerful when one is trying to work through it all out. And then we can start to move towards releasing it. In fact, most of the work I do in the hospital lives in this space. And such, the music is creating empathy and compassion on an aesthetic level. With rare exceptions, the singer is the lead instrumentalist. On The Art of Songwriting - I need a focus group. There is a time in every (music) project when things can change. A time when a different opportunity (sound, rhythm, style, interpretation) is presented that can alter the direction and flavour of a song. In many cases, after evaluating options, you stand firm, reject the notion. Or, make slight adjustments to suit. But recently, I was swayed. The Century is reached! ....by this I mean I have now reached my 100th minuet. I see it as a 'Century marker' in terms of been simply the three-figure number, from which you do not go in 'reverse' from once it's there on the page]. It is a two page piece and quite manageable to play on any solo instrument, and like most of my tunes, is dedicated for melodic line on its own, as I feel there is still so little music envisaged, at the onset, for one person to play alone. They all have a melody to them - which also seems often lacking in semi-classical world often these days . So there it is, in the file box with its family of other 'minuets' - I have not done a video of playing it myself. However - recently I did a little video of number 86 minuet- which was hinted in its general style of music to Mr. G. Ph Telemann - [in a very eclectic manner!]. That number 86 minuet is called 'Mr Telemann's delight'. In a way a simple and short homage to the individual who also wrote 100 minuets, that made me attempt my own just over a month ago in December [ 2023] which was when I started writing them. Here is link to that number 86 one; and as for number 100 - the minuets will have some more to come yet, possibly a couple of miniature ones. Watch Me Shoehorn The Most Interesting Phenomenon in Independent Music into a Discussion About My Accounting Firm Niching is all the rage within accounting firmrunning circles, and with good reason. The refrain is almost always that you're not niched *enough*. But what if there's another way to think about niching? Enter Australian psych-rock/jazz-fusion/prog-rock/thrash-metal sensation King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. You might think based on the name alone that something strange is afoot, and you'd be right. Let's start with some numbers: - 25 albums released in 10 years - Released 5 albums in one year....*twice* (2017 and 2023) - Released a trio of albums based on microtonal harmony (and made it work three times) - Didn't release an album for 55 weeks and instead playing 113 shows in that time period. - The wikipedia entry for KGLW states that the genres they've covered include: psychedelic rock, garage rock, acid rock, progressive rock, surf rock, krautrock, psychedelic pop, indie rock, neo-psychedelia, thrash metal, stoner metal, progressive metal, sludge, folk, jazz, Tropicália, synth-prog, and microtonal music. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, then, is the antithesis of niching at least as it's usually defined. There are no labels, no constraints, and they certainly don't have a website that only caters to serving physician practices based on the West Coast in beach communities. But to anyone into music, it's woefully apparent that KGLW is about the most niched interest that any music fan into moderately mainstream music can have. You're not going to hear many I-V-vi-IV chord progressions, and you have to be as at home listening to jazz as you are metal. And therein lies the niche: people interested in complex harmony and innovative soundscaping, folks who have it bad for always hearing something new and fresh to their ears. And it works for King Gizzard. They have their own music festival which sells out annually. They routinely play 3 and 4 night residences at some of the largest and most prestigious venues worldwide. Their merch store is constantly sold out of popular items, and they answer to no music label, executives, or higher music industry power. How does this relate to accounting? For Seamless, we've taken a similar approach to niching. Our niche is not based on industry; we're agnostic to industry. Instead, our niche is the nature of our clients and what they have in common. They're almost always family-owned, entrepreneur-operated business with thin or non-existent middle management staffing who face the same problems regardless of industry. We're able to take the same base playbook and tweak it across a multitude of industries, much the same way King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard takes the same approach to complex and innovative harmony and applies it across a variety of genres. I'll take a bow for this very tortured metaphor and wish you a very happy Thursday
