As we dive into 2024, I’m thrilled to share some exciting updates from my work at Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij (Flanders Environment Agency): 🌍 EU-Funded Projects: - VMM is now actively involved in 20 ongoing projects supported by EU funding. 80% of these initiatives already stem from the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2020-2027. 💡 Recent Achievements: - Over the past six months, ALL 10 initiatives submitted for evaluation with VMM as a (lead) partner received approval. This success translates to an additional €2.9 million in EU subsidies, empowering us to invest in impactful actions that enhance Flanders’ climate resilience. 🌊 Weerbaar Dommelland: - A standout project in our portfolio is the new Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland project "Weerbaar Dommelland". As project lead, VMM collaborates with regional and local water managers, businesses, and stakeholders. Together, we are implementing a comprehensive package of climate adaptation measures along the cross-border Dommel river basin - from Peer (VL) to Eindhoven (NL). 🌧️ 📈 Driving Positive Change: - Let’s connect if you share similar interests or want to explore collaboration opportunities ...and remember: a pretty face next to yours never hurts! 😎

It’s an era where SUSTAINABILITY takes center stage in the maritime industry. We’re excited to share this insightful article that caught our attention. It explores a pioneering project, aimed at reshaping the future of sustainable cruising. An association of 12 maritime partners and SINTEF, a leading research institute, is embarking on a groundbreaking journey. They're unveiling plans for a zero-emission ship that will grace the Norwegian coast by 2030. Their vision is bold, but it is also powered by some truly innovative technologies. From wind and solar sails that harness the forces of nature to Artificial Intelligence-guided bridge systems that promise more living space for passengers. Sea Zero is a beacon of progress in the world of cruising. However, it's crucial to pause and consider the implications of these innovations. How will travelers adapt to an AI-guided bridge that resembles an airplane cockpit? Can wind and solar sails truly provide sufficient propulsion for a ship of such magnitudes? As we embrace these revolutionary concepts, we must also address potential challenges and opportunities. What do these changes mean for the future of cruising, and how can we ensure that sustainability remains at the forefront of this maritime evolution? Click the link to learn more.

Mobility is one of the great achievements of our time and we want and need to transport people and goods. Unfortunately, this also has a great negative impact on the environment. I invite you all to join Katja Elschner, Jaqueline Matijevic, Ferdinand Pospischil, Alexander Maximilian Till Till and me at the European Forum Alpbach to discuss "Unity through green mobility: Railways and Sustainability" The railway system is the most ecological and economical way to transport people and goods. Therefore, the rail can be the mode of transport for green mobility (Yes we can). But why stagnates the share of freight transport and partly also of passenger transport. We see many reasons and some of them are that the railway is still national, annual, and manual driven. Instead, we need an European oriented, Flexible and Digital railway system. If you would like join us directly at the European Forum Alpbach or give us some comments to be taken into account. https://lnkd.in/erkMXKtz

Working with SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute is so much fun as it always allows to delve into a wide array of intriguing and significant subjects. Although wastewater treatment may not sound like a most glamorous topic at first, it is simply crucial, and also fascinating. Last week I was on a study visit together with Tiia from SEI Tallinn and the rest of the NURSECOAST-II project consortium in Denmark. The visit offered an opportunity for project partners to explore two NURSECOAST-II pilot wastewater treatment plants in Denmark, one in Skovsgaard and another in Næstved. In this project, we aim to improve the health of the Baltic Sea by enhancing the small wastewater systems that are especially vulnerable to high seasonality. We are concentrating on coastal tourist towns, villages, and settlements surrounding the Baltic Sea. These areas experience seasonal fluctuations in wastewater production, leading to inadequacies in small local wastewater treatment systems during the peak summer tourism season. Therefore, innovative solutions are imperative to enhance wastewater treatment efficiency. And, of course, communication and stakeholder engagement are crucial parts of the process. SEI Tallinn will survey decentralised wastewater systems in Moonsund Archipelago in Western Estonia. In addition, we are supporting the communication work package of the project. Yet again our #ShipZERO Workshop outstripped expectations! #ShipZERO28.5 in Singapore moved the needle even further for zero-emissions ship technologies, due in part to the “Heavy Hitters” in the room, to name a few, Matthieu de Tugny, Executive Vice President of Bureau Veritas | Marine & Offshore, Hing Chao, executive chairman of Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited, and Craig Eason of TradeWinds. 🌍Next steps - we will work with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to create an action roadmap based on the outcomes of the presentations, discussions, and brainstorming sessions with follow-up workshops in the pipeline. ShipZERO 28.5 marks the shift from an exchange of ideas to direct action. This will be our modus operandi going forward, as we move to different geographies, focusing on local challenges, designing action road maps that lead to tangible projects, creating absolute zero emissions eco-systems. As pointed out by Mr de Tugny and Mr Chao these will lay the foundation for the eventual transition of the largest vessels in the world fleet. Are you a #shipowner seeking to reduce your emissions? A #cargoowner looking at your #scope_two and #scope_three emissions? An absolute zero emissions solution provider? Reach out and get involved!
