The WaterHUB last night won gold in the South Africa yearly Eco-Logic Award. It's impressive to see the recognition and acknowledgment of efforts in environmental sustainability and water management. The WaterHUB's focus on promoting collaboration between government, industry, and research institutions for healthier rivers, increased food nutrition, and security is crucial in addressing environmental challenges. The initiative's location in the Winelands of Franschhoek adds a local context to its impact on the community and the environment. It's also noteworthy that The WaterHUB is set to become an important component of the Platform for Vocational Excellence in Water, contributing to the reputation building of the water sector. This indicates a commitment to not only immediate environmental concerns but also to the long-term development and sustainability of the water industry. The other award finalists also showcase the diverse range of efforts in areas such as nature conservation, wildlife protection, climate change, and circular economy innovation. This demonstrates the multifaceted approach needed to address environmental challenges effectively. Overall, it's great to see initiatives like The WaterHUB being recognized and celebrated for their positive impact on the environment and society.

This week we bring you another Transfer-to-Action Fellowship project success story from our alumna, Bruna Arruda. She participated in the UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Short Course on Sustainability for Food Systems and Forest Products: The Role of Consumption and Production (SC86). Our world is facing food insecurity at an alarming rate. According to the 2023 Global Report on the Food Crisis (GRFC), more than a quarter of a billion people in 58 food crisis countries/territories were acutely food insecure and in need of urgent food assistance in 2022. This is the highest number in the seven-year history of the GRFC report. Today, more than ever, we need to adopt sustainable food production and consumption practices and engage the future generation in transformative learning to understand the importance of growing their own food. Bruna's project helps schools in São Paulo, Brazil to learn about soil use, food production and consumption through the implementation of vegetable gardens. School children are empowered and supported to learn to produce and consume their own food in a sustainable way, instilling environmental awareness and healthy eating habits. The project focuses on the concept of "learning by doing" and encourages environmentally friendly civic practices that are conducive to dynamic, participatory, enjoyable and inclusive pedagogical work. Watch Bruna's project video and get inspired to start your own vegetable garden. Unique example of cooperation between sister projects ✅ FAIRCHAIN_EU ✅ FOODRUS #H2020 Project ✅ CO-FRESH ✅ Lowinfood ✅ Ploutos_H2020 Read about our achievements and lessons learned ⬇️
🤝 On 26 October the five sister projects FAIRCHAIN_EU FOODRUS #H2020 Project CO-FRESH Ploutos_H2020 and #LOWINFOOD celebrated a joint event in Brussels to discuss and share the experience of the #cooperation that has been established among them from the very beginning of the projects. 👥The first joint meeting took place in November 2020, even before some of the kick-off meetings of the 5️⃣ projects involved in the cooperation. Three years later, the representatives of the #sisterprojects came to #Brussels to report the positive outcomes of this collaboration. This collaboration has been focused on joint #communication on the websites, organisation of #dissemination activities and the use of the Sustainable Food System Innovation #Platform, along with the efforts that are being made to integrate the policy recommendations emerging from the innovation pilots. 🎯 In the second part of the meeting, the five coordinators participated in a roundtable to discuss the lessons learnt from this cooperation, highlighting best practices and room for improvement. The three project and policy officers in charge of following the five sister projects on behalf of the European Research Executive Agency (REA) also participated in the meeting, commenting that this collaboration represents a story of success that can be taken as an example for other projects, and highlighting that most of the impact of the collaboration is yet to come as the results are being disseminated🔝🔝. #networking #collaboration #H2020FoodSis #sharingknowledge #lessonslearned #policyrecommendations #bestpractices #foodwaste #foodloss #innovation #reducefoodwaste #sustainability #EUGreenDeal #H2020 Clara Cicatiello Claudia Giordano Università degli Studi della Tuscia Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna Eriselda C. In a world seeking sustainable food solutions, Singapore is setting an inspiring example with its "30 by 30" vision. Picture this: We're 7 years away from Singapore's 2030 aim of producing 30% of its nutritional needs locally. An ambitious goal of self-sufficiency? Not exactly, it's a massive commitment to reduce food imports and embrace sustainable practices. Vertical/urban farms and aquaculture systems are central to this transformation. These innovative methods include space optimisation, reduced water use, and minimising environmental impact. But it's not purely just technology; it's also about cultivating a thriving food ecosystem. Singapore supports research, startups, and urban farming initiatives to make this vision a reality. Through collaboration, innovation, and a strong commitment to sustainability, Singapore is on its way to a more resilient and greener food future – and we want to be part of the roadmap 💚
