Preventing violence and training youth leaders.

About us

Since 1991, as mentors, youth leaders, counselors, case managers, intervention specialists and violence interrupters, we at Youth ALIVE! have worked to help violently wounded people heal themselves and their community. Our mission is to prevent violence and create young leaders. We believe that young people growing up and going to school in the city’s most violent neighborhoods, possess the power to change the city for the better. We meet our clients where they are, at home, in school, at the hospital bedsides of young shooting victims, on the streets of our most dangerous neighborhoods. Youth ALIVE! saves lives though violence prevention, intervention ,and healing. Always happy to connect with our partners at the University of California, San Francisco Wraparound Project. So much of the work we do to prevent violence is regional and we can only do this work if we do it together. The Wraparound Project and Youth ALIVE! Are two of the founding member programs of The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention. Hospital-based violence intervention programs like ours are evidence-based public health approaches to violence prevention, intervention, and healing.

Following the Surgeon General's declaration that gun violence is indeed a public health issue, KPIX | CBS San Francisco/Bay Area's Jose Martinez interviewed Youth ALIVE!'s Director of Development and Communications Lauren Greenberg about what Oakland's community based organization for violence prevention, intervention, and healing is doing to disrupt the cycle of violence in The Town following the tragic shooting during Oakland's Juneteenth celebration. "We're working on it. We're healing people. We're preventing violence. We're saving hundreds or thousands of lives every year," said Greenberg. "We're upset, we're saddened, this is our city. Juneteenth is an important holiday. It should be a time of jubilation, but instead folks were scattering." But we do what we always do in these situations: our folks are out in the community calming tensions, connecting survivors to resources, and providing opportunities for our youth to prevent violence and build a thriving future. Thank you Megan Ranney for lifting up this critical report. US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy declared what we at Youth ALIVE! have known all along: #gunviolence is a #publichealth problem and thus must be addressed as such. AND, it's something we can fix. I'm overjoyed that we now have a Surgeon General's report from Dr. Vivek Murthy, declaring what many of us have said for years: #gunviolence is a #publichealth problem that affects far too many of us across the US, with ripple effects that are both wide and deep. AND it's something that we can fix. This report is a landmark for helping us make forward progress on: ➕ measurement of the problem: we need data; ➕ development of effective interventions: we need research; ➕ scaling what already works: we know enough to act; ➕ supporting survivors: recognizing that the ripple effects are wide and long. Onwards, my friends. Nelba Márquez-Greene, LMFT Yale School of Public Health (And I'm honored to have a few citations of my own work on this issue included in the SG's report.)

Thank you for recognizing the innovative, lifesaving work of Youth ALIVE! National Offices of Violence Prevention Network (NOVPN), particularly during #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth.

During #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth, we are showcasing the life-saving work of OVPs and Community Violence Intervention (CVI) organizations across the nation. Strong partnerships between OVPs and frontline organizations are critical to local violence reduction efforts. #OVPxCVI #WeWillEndGunViolence The City of Oakland DVP x Youth ALIVE! Oakland DVP: The Department of Violence Prevention (DVP) was established in 2017 to elevate the City’s community service-based approach to violence reduction. Through DVP, the City sought to better match the attention and resources dedicated to the City’s law enforcement approach to violence reduction through the Oakland Police Department. The Office is led by Dr. Holli Joshi, who possesses vast leadership experience and a track record of successfully implementing evidence-based violence prevention and intervention strategies. Youth ALIVE!: Frontline staff comprises men and women who grew up in their communities. Some are former victims, some formerly incarcerated. All are highly trained in the best practices of their profession. They bring no judgment – only understanding, knowledge, and a path to greater peace for traumatized individuals and the city. Their goals are to 1) educate and train young leaders, 2) interrupt the cycle of violence on the streets, 3) convince survivors and their loved ones not to retaliate, and 4) provide ongoing support to help the wounded and grieving get needed services and heal from their trauma.
