Summer Stride, the annual Hartford Marathon Foundation 5K and 10K road race in New London, boasted record attendance this weekend as more than 600 participants ran or walked the race route. Lawrence + Memorial Hospital is the race sponsor. A beautiful summer morning and plenty of enthusiasm made for a wonderful event that helped highlight the hospital's commitment to a healthier community. Thank you to the L+M Pharmacy team who worked as volunteers along the race route; the Auxiliary of L+M; Yale New Haven Children's Hospital and their popular popsicle cart, retirees and L+M employees from across all departments who ran the 5K and 10K.

Yale New Haven Children's Hospital pediatric specialty providers and staff had an amazing day meeting children and their families at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo at our Teddy Bear Clinic. Children brought their teddy bear or stuffy to the zoo for a health check-up. Thank you to everyone who participated and visited us. A lot of things have changed since 1974, when Doug Lemay began volunteering at the Yale New Haven Hospital Saint Raphael Campus – but Doug remains a presence at 1450 Chapel Street. He recently marked 50 years and more than 90,000 hours donated – the first time such a milestone has been achieved by a volunteer at YNHH. While he has volunteered in a number of departments over the years, he has been in his current role in Pharmacy Services since the late 1990s. “Doug is truly a member of our family, and we are so glad that he chose us to be his home away from home,” said Eileen Hansen, senior manager, Volunteer Services. Doug, who lives in New Haven, has no plans to “retire” any time soon. “I’m going to keep busy as long as I’m alive,” he says. Bridgeport Hospital’s Emergency Departments in both Bridgeport and Milford have taken home Lantern Awards from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). Established in 2011, the ENA Lantern Award recognizes excellence in Emergency Departments. This year, only 94 hospitals across the country received the honor for demonstrating exceptional performance in key areas. Applicants had to demonstrate how their departments showed a commitment to care and their initiatives to improve nursing staff’s well-being. This is the first time Bridgeport Hospital has won the award: http://ynh.care/6N.

In addition, they can get connect with other social services like transportation, housing and employment. When King Charles III was treated for an enlarged prostate – also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – earlier this year, the world took notice. While many men may choose to ignore the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, getting checked out can offer options for symptom relief as well as rule out prostate cancer. “One of the most bothersome features of BPH is getting up several times a night to urinate,” said Edward Paraiso, MD, a urologist with Northeast Medical Group who is affiliated with Bridgeport Hospital.
