Never underestimate the power of a girl and her pen!
About us
WriteGirl is a creative writing and mentoring organization that promotes creativity, critical thinking and leadership skills to empower teen girls in Los Angeles. Through workshops, readings, publications and mentoring relationships with professional women writers, the innovative Writegirl program offers girls techniques and insights into poetry, songwriting, fiction, journalism and more. Events are held at some of the most inspiring cultural locations in Los Angeles such as MOCA, the Autry Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Huntington Gardens. Now in its 17th anniversary season, WriteGirl has annually guided 100% of its Core Mentoring Program participants to graduate from high school and enroll in college. In November 2013, First Lady Michelle Obama presented WriteGirl with the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the highest national honor awarded to exemplary after-school and out-of-school time programs from across the country. In 2014, WriteGirl Executive Director Keren Taylor was selected as a CNN Hero. WriteGirl helps girls develop communication skills, confidence and an expanded view of themselves and their futures. www.writegirl.org

Writing Activity: Write about an old thing you own! Describe it, and tell us the story of why you have it. Be specific! We shared this fun activity and others at the 2024 @/CATE (California Association of Teachers of English) Conference this past weekend to provide English teachers with helpful strategies to help teens tap into their creative voice. #CATE2024 We loved seeing what the teachers wrote about! What would YOU write about?
