We are proud to release our second annual review, detailing the significant milestones WMP achieved in 2023. This year has been transformative, with partnerships playing a crucial role in our growth strategy. A key highlight in 2023 was launching a new joint venture in Brazil with World Mosquito Program Brasil (WMP Brasil) to expand access to Wolbachia mosquitoes across the country. Additionally, we commenced deployments in Laos, El Salvador, and Honduras, and expanded further in New Caledonia and Indonesia. In 2023, WMP’s technology reached over 11 million people across 14 countries, resulting in numerous averted hospitalisations and a substantial decrease in dengue cases. 🔗 Discover more about our progress and future plans in the full review via the link in the comments #WorldMosquitoProgram #AnnualReview #PublicHealth #DenguePrevention #GlobalHealth #dengue Monash University Wellcome Trust Hatch Macquarie Group Silicon Valley Community Foundation EY GRUNDFOS Innovafeed Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Save the Children International FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz IBMP

🔬 WMP is a not-for-profit initiative working to protect the global community from mosquito-borne diseases.
About us
The World Mosquito Program (WMP) is a not-for-profit group of companies owned by Australia's Monash University that works to protect the global community from mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya. The World Mosquito Program uses naturally occurring bacteria called Wolbachia to reduce the ability of mosquitoes to transmit viruses that cause life-threatening diseases throughout tropical countries of the world. Following years of laboratory research, independent risk analysis and successful field trials, WMP has undertaken deployments in 13 countries around the world and has widespread support from communities, governments and public health regulators. We are now undergoing rapid organisational change to position WMP to play a key role in scaling global access to Wolbachia and helping to protect the 4 billion people worldwide who live at risk of dengue and other mosquito transmitted viral diseases. WMP is funded by governments and philanthropists around the world. More information about the WMP can be obtained from www.worldmosquitoprogram.org.

We're thrilled to share a documentary that features our CEO, Scott O'Neill as well as World Mosquito Program Brasil (WMP Brasil)'s Luciano Moreira, on CGTN Europe’s RAZOR Science Show. The episode is titled “Can Mosquitoes Save the World?” and features the all-important work we’re doing at the World Mosquito Program. In the documentary, Scott and Luciano talk about our unique approach to fighting mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and Zika. As you already know, instead of trying to eliminate mosquitoes, we use Wolbachia bacteria to make them harmless, a technique we've successfully trialed in 14 countries already. The presenter, Reya El-Salahi, takes us on a journey, exploring the growing threat of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe and how climate change is playing a role. It’s a fascinating watch and highlights the importance of what we’re doing. We recommend sitting down with a cup of tea and having a watch. It's very good! https://lnkd.in/eSajV9Qi #dengue #wolbachia

The League of Science recently interviewed Nelson Grisales, WMP's Director of Field Entomology and Project Delivery 🌿✨ Nelson shared some invaluable insights into our fight against dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases using our Wolbachia method. He covers a multitude of subjects including: 💠 The alarming rise in dengue cases worldwide. 💠 How our Wolbachia method naturally and sustainably reduces disease transmission. 💠 The importance of community engagement and collaboration. 💠 And finally some success stories from Medellín, Colombia, and beyond! The interview is in Spanish, but don't worry - there are subtitles! #dengue #colombia #wolbachia https://lnkd.in/esT_-g2C

🌍 Did you know Brazil accounts for 82% of the world’s dengue cases this year? The World Mosquito Program is expanding its Wolbachia method across Brazil, bringing new hope in the fight against dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. "By the end of the year, all these areas will have Wolbachia established," says Gabriel Sylvestre Ribeiro, PhD, MBA, World Mosquito Program Brasil (WMP Brasil)'s Operations Manager. In our latest story, written by Alex Jackson, we explore the success of our work in Niterói and how we hope that this will be replicated in other cities: “Expanding the number of cities that use the Wolbachia method and building new factories are of great importance if we are to face future epidemics and better protect the Brazilian population,” says Ethel Maciel, the Ministry of Health’s Secretary for Health and Environment Surveillance. “This technology is proof that science needs to be increasingly fostered and valued.” You can read all about how we're scaling up in Brazil via the link in the comments. #WeWelcomeWolbachia #denguefever #wolbachia #zikavirus #brazil Luciano Moreira

How are we supporting the fight against Zika? We’ve supported many initiatives, including: 1️⃣ The World Mosquito Program (WMP), which releases Aedes mosquitoes carrying a bacterium that reduces their ability to transmit mosquito-borne viruses like Zika. The programme, which we’ve helped fund since 2014, has protected over 11 million people in 14 countries. 2️⃣ Funding research on Zika – from a study on how infectious diseases during pregnancy affect a child’s health, to researchers developing a tool to estimate how changes to climate and land use will affect the transmission of diseases caused by infected insects. 3️⃣ Launching a funding call this year to improve our knowledge of Zika and dengue spread, immunity and clinical outcomes.
