Last Tuesday, we had the pleasure of hosting Deputy of State Richard Verma and Dr. Monica Duffy Toft of The Fletcher School at Tufts University for our annual State of the State Department program, this year focusing on national security. Thank you to Deputy Secretary Verma and Dr. Toft for a dynamic and engaging discussion and to our audience members who joined us and asked thoughtful questions. We also want to thank the Boston Public Library and the GBH Forum Network for collaborating with us on this special program. Lastly, we extend our gratitude to our generous sponsor the Lowell Institute for making our programming possible.

Today we bid a fond farewell to Noelle Hor and Naz Ozturk, who joined the WorldBoston team in January as Program Associates as part of Northeastern University's Cooperative Education Program, and have worked closely on our Global Engagement and Citizen Diplomacy programs during their six months with us. Thank you to Naz and Noelle for their hard work during the last six months. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors! During the summer months, Naz will continue to support the WorldBoston team in a remote capacity as a Global Engagement intern.

Tuesday Night, I attended a WorldBoston event, which delved into the pivotal role, diplomacy can play in addressing urgent international challenges. Leading the discussion was Dr. Monica Duffy Toft, an academic and director of Center for Strategic Studies at The Fletcher School at Tufts University with US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma. Few points that stood out for me: - The US role in the world globally through its diplomatic missions and the need to keep an eye on allies and US commitments. - Almost a double-digit gap in job positions to be filled in the State Department. - The need for workforce development and modernization in climate and tech particularly data analytics. - A dissent channel within the State Department to address disagreements in policy. --- As an outsider looking in, sometimes the US foreign policy can seem more opaque than transparent. Given the history of increasing military interventions, it often begs the question - How big is the space for diplomacy amongst military interventions? Dr. Monica and Sidita Kushi covered this brilliantly in a prior WorldBoston talk (https://lnkd.in/gVwBRtyK) To really have a rich conversation, having representation from the Department of Defense would have given the topic of national security a more holistic understanding of diplomacy from all angles between the doves the hawks. #Diplomacy #NationalSecurity #USStateDepartment #WorldBoston
