⚛ The Indian government has announced plans to partner with the private sector to develop small modular reactors in a 2024-25 budget announcement which recognizes a significant role for nuclear in the country's future energy mix. World Nuclear Association's Shah-Nawaz AHMAD - Senior Advisor for India, Middle East and South-East Asia, reflects on the announcement: “India, the world’s most populous country, needs to balance its need for more electricity and growth with its environmental & Net Zero commitments. India has stayed the course through wider application of renewables and nuclear. Specifically, India’s commitment to nuclear power development remains strong; building large nuclear power plants (NPPs) and pursuing policies that facilitate development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and their early introduction.
