An online flora of all known plants supporting the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation.

About us

World Flora Online is the international initiative to achieve Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and provides a global overview of the diversity of plant species. It is the essential tool for conservation planners, policymakers and practitioners at all levels. The WFO is an open-access, Web-based compendium of the world’s plant species. It is a collaborative, international project, building upon existing knowledge and published Floras, checklists and revisions but will also require the collection and generation of new information on poorly know plant groups and plants in unexplored regions. The development of the WFO project has been an exemplary global botanical community voluntary effort. Unlike many major international projects, this has not been supported by any significant independent funding provided for the project. Nevertheless, individual members of the WFO Consortium, now numbering more than 51 institutions and organizations, have contributed substantial in-kind and financial resources to support the project.

We have a fresh update for our WFO Plant List! The WFO Plant List is the consensus list of names used as the taxonomic backbone of the World Flora Online portal. A new version is released every six months in conjunction with the solstices. Since December, we’ve added 40,209 names and enhanced 1.39 million name records with classification, nomenclatural, or other data improvements. Check out the latest update at wfoplantlist.org

World Flora Online is always growing! We're excited to announce that we recently added distribution data from the Kew Gardens Checklist of Vascular Plants to the WFO portal. These data are now available as text and as maps and include distributions of both native and introduced species. Having more detailed geography available for plant species provides botanists, conservationists, and ecologists with more essential information as they work to study, and save, the world’s plants.

What makes some plant groups so successful? Researchers are using WFO data to find out! Researchers from Trinity College Dublin are looking at “big plant genera,” which comprise more than 500 species, to understand why certain plant groups dominate Earth. While there are nearly 14,000 known genera of flowering plants, one in four flowering plants are in just 87 genera. For their research, scientists repeated an analysis published 20 years ago and found that big genera are getting bigger. The team now aims to understand why, with a goal of finding out what flowering plants are the greatest risk from climate change. This research wouldn’t be possible without WFO, an international, collaborative initiative!

Big news for WFO!! The Catalogue of Life will incorporate our Conifer Taxonomic Expert Network, or TEN. The Catalogue of Life is the most complete authoritative list of the world's species, maintained by hundreds of global taxonomists. It is used as the taxonomic backbone for Global Biodiversity Information Facility and other global biodiversity resources. The WFO Conifer TEN is the first of our well-curated groups to be approved for inclusion in COL. This significantly extends the impact and uptake of the work of TENs and WFO. We are excited to continue to collaborate with COL and add more of our TENs to their dataset. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gQTr2iVs... And stay tuned for more news!

The World Flora Online held its 22nd Council Meeting at Fort Worth Botanic Garden in Texas last week. Individuals from 20 institutions in 16 countries came together in-person and virtually to discuss the latest updates on this international project that is working to create an open-access, web-based compendium of all the world’s known vascular plants and mosses. We are excited to share that we adopted a new strategic plan and welcomed two new Taxnomic Expert Networks, or TENs. Visit worldfloraonline.org to learn more!
