About us

Workstead is an award-winning, multidisciplinary design firm established in 2009. Since its founding, Workstead has earned acclaim for one-of-a-kind projects that are comprehensive in vision and exacting in detail. Stefanie Brechbuehler, Robert Highsmith, and Ryan Mahoney oversee Workstead’s creative practice from studios in Brooklyn and Hudson, New York. Workstead’s Brooklyn studio, which focuses on interior and building commissions, is sought-after by homeowners and hospitality entrepreneurs for evocative places that reflect the spirit of the client, site, and community. Workstead dedicates its Hudson, New York, studio and showroom to lighting. Workstead conceives lighting for its own interiors and building projects, and it designs lighting collections for online sale to trade professionals and retail consumers. Throughout its body of work, Workstead engages in a design process that is both disciplined and deeply collaborative. The outcomes of those efforts weave reverence for historic precedent, progressive expression, and authentic materiality into places of stunning longevity.

Two years since Rizzoli released Workstead - Interiors of Beauty and Necessity, the publisher has given us a chance to share our hospitality spaces in a follow-up monograph. We are pleased to introduce our second book, Workstead - Interiors of Belonging, available for pre-order now! Our newest book does not merely duplicate the first. Instead, we interpreted this unique opportunity to revisit one era of our history as an invitation - namely, to treat this monograph like a design exercise, dissecting the medium into components to embrace some parts, while disrupting others. The resulting pages reflect Workstead's enduring purpose - balancing beauty, necessity, and belonging to create lasting buildings, interiors, lighting, objects, and collaborations.
