Today Alicia Hawley gave a very personal presentation, "Confessions of an alcoholic." The numbers of people in the legal profession with anxiety, depression, and substance abuse is staggering. And so many feel isolated. This was an important message to share so others know they are not alone. #mentalhealth #addiction #wellness

Today was a really really good day. I spoke publicly for the first time about my journey through depression, anxiety, addiction and recovery. In the 13 years I lived in active addiction, I felt very alone and like I was the only person going through it. I have made it a priority to help take the stigma and shame and fear out of addiction, especially in the legal industry. Alcohol abuse rates in the legal industry are 36%, 5 times greater than the general population. And yet no one talks about it. SO I'M TALKING ABOUT IT. Perhaps one of the absolute best things about today was the incredible support I got from some of my female colleagues before, during, and after my Ted style talk. I got numerous texts this morning telling me how brave I am, words of encouragement and unconditional support. I looked into the 600+ person crowd and saw these women in stage mom mode having my back. Women lifting each other up instead of cutting each other down is powerful stuff because we are stronger together. Thank you to LegalGeek and Beth Fellner and Jimmy Vestbirk for giving me this enormous platform to share this important message, and thank you Blair Cohen Donna M. Chiara Vega, CEDS Alisa McLellan Susan Estes Cara Lemire for being my hype squad. #addiction #sobriety #wellness #mentalhealth #legalgeek2024

I am SO looking forward to LegalGeek on Thursday and am honored that they asked me to speak about mental health and wellbeing. This will be my MOST personal presentation ever: "Confessions of an Alcoholic." Delivered in a Ted style format to a sold out crowd, it should be a good one!! It's one of only a few presentations approved for CLE, so even more reason to be in the room where it happens! See you there?? #mentalhealth #addiction #sobriety #legalgeek2024

Did you catch Alisa McLellan speaking at The Masters Conference Legal? Pro tip, don't just hand all your data over to a consultant and think you are done -- you still have the duty to supervise! #ediscovery #legaltech #ethics
Great discussion on the data explosion and ethical duties of technical competence. So great to hear my colleague Tony Baskin and fellow WiE board member Alisa McLellan speak on this topic. Thank you to Alisa McLellan and Abigail Mast for bringing together Women in eDiscovery - Chicago Chapter and the Chicago Chapter of Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists (ACEDS) for a comprehensive presentation by Sara Davey on Bystander Training. For those who couldn't attend and are wondering how to support or intervene when witnessing harassment, think about: Delegate: Talk to a manager, bartender, or even call 911 if necessary Distract: Find a way to break up the moment or conversation. Direct: Directly intervene if safe to do so. Delayed: If you can't take action in the moment, check in later with the person and offer resources. Document: Write down what happened (or record if safe). Thank you to DISCO for sponsoring, and Perkins Coie LLP for hosting.
