About us
Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) is a non-profit and membership-based organization dedicated to the recruitment, retention and advancement of women in the cybersecurity field. Founded through a National Science Foundation grant to Tennessee Tech University in 2012, WiCyS (pronounced Wee-Sis) is the brainchild of Dr. Ambareen Siraj, who grew the initiative into a vibrant and active community of women and supportive men from academia, industry, government and research. The organization is working to improve diversity and pipeline in the cybersecurity workforce, and it does so through numerous initiatives, together with Strategic Partners and an army of energetic volunteers. WiCyS' Founding Partners are Cisco, Facebook and Palo Alto Networks. In addition to Dr. Siraj and representatives from the Founding Partners, the WiCyS Board of Governors includes Chair Dr. Janell Straach of UT-Dallas, Treasurer Dr. Costis Toregas of George Washington University, and leaders from Carnegie Mellon University, the Naval Postgraduate School, and Societe Generale. WiCyS helps build a strong cybersecurity workforce with gender equality by facilitating recruitment, retention and advancement for women in the field. WiCyS offers mentoring, training programs, scholarships, virtual and in-person conferences, leadership series, career fairs, webinars, and more to women at all stages of their cybersecurity career journey!

Women in cybersecurity excel in many areas, but often self-select out of the hiring process when they don’t meet 100% of job requirements. How can we change our job descriptions and the recruitment process as a whole, to attract the right people and not just hope for a unicorn? Listen to the full interview with N2K's Heather Monthie, PhD, Simone Petrella, and Jeff Welgan, Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS)'s Lynn Dohm, and N2K | T-Minus's Maria Varmazis on N2K | CyberWire: https://lnkd.in/eFgxHgQH. Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) Executive Director. Strategist. Problem-Solver. Kind. X: @lynn_dohm. Top 25 leaders in cybersecurity for 2024.
According to our research with Aleria, women in cybersecurity experience a glass ceiling 6-10 years into their careers. The research points to many contributing factors, but we were also asked, "Is this a performance issue?" You only have to ask us that question once, and we're on it. Thanks to the fabulous partnership with N2K | CyberWire, Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) is happy to report that WiCyS members OUTPERFORMED all other participants in all SEVEN of the NICE categories and additionally, in 17 of the 20 specialty areas. In this hard skills assessment, it was also interesting to discover that those stating they were more junior in their role were performing at a higher capacity.
