Exciting news! Last week, the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) presented Metro with a 2024 Gold Safety Award for our groundbreaking Station Overrun/Just Culture Pilot program. The APTA Gold Safety Award honors public transportation systems that have demonstrated innovative concepts or effective problem-solving techniques not previously applied in the public transportation industry. The Station Overrun/Just Culture Pilot program revolutionized how Metro investigates safety events by identifying all contributing factors, such as procedural flaws, training issues, or environmental conditions. It assesses whether an operator’s actions were deliberate and provides managers with a consistent framework to decide if disciplinary action is necessary or if alternative measures like additional training or procedural changes would be more effective in preventing future incidents. Without transit, our region would lose more than $9 BILLION worth of economic activity due to heavy traffic congestion, lack of access to jobs, & slower movement of goods. New research shows how investing in transit helps our communities thrive: https://lnkd.in/eASkTmC8 #wmata

Meet Doojin, Metro’s Director of Transit Asset Management, who brings five years of experience overseeing the enterprise asset management framework (the systems and processes used to manage physical assets throughout their lifecycle). His team ensures that the systems used to gather data from rail, bus, paratransit, and infrastructure assets are providing accurate information which is used to provide service updates to our customers and follow up for reported maintenance issues. “It’s a small team of twelve, including myself. We are needed because there is so much information out there, but you need someone to help make sense of it.” He says his team ensures that everyone is on the same page, which helps Metro improve its business practices, financial accountability, and service provision for our customers. Doojin, born in South Korea and having lived in Iran, Greece, and now the U.S., brings a unique and diverse perspective to his role. He’s passionate about public transportation, a passion shaped by his experiences in different cultures and countries. “Transit is a great way to connect people,” he says. “When you get on transit, you see the culture through the lens of the locals.” With a love for kimchi stew, a taste of his Korean heritage, he celebrates Asian Pacific Heritage Month to promote awareness and learning. “It’s a good way for others to understand someone who may be different from them. Highlighting a particular community provides an opportunity for recognition and allows people who are not part of it to say, ‘Okay, I’m learning a little more about this culture.” “People are fundamentally pretty similar no matter what they look like.” #AsianPacificHeritageMonth #wmata

Today at Metro Headquarters, we celebrated Pan Asian Heritage in honor of Asian/Pacific Island American Heritage Month! It was a special day where we honored and embraced the rich diversity of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures that are an integral part of our community and workplace. As part of this celebration, we proudly launched Metro's Pan Asian Employee Resource Group. This group will play a vital role in promoting diversity, fostering inclusion, and recognizing the unique contributions of our Pan Asian employees. Thank you to all who joined us for this wonderful event. Your support and participation made it even more meaningful! #AsianPacificIslanderHeritageMonth #wmata
