Honoured to have contributed to this special report that emerged out of the "Future of Digital Wellbeing Conference" we hosted in Amsterdam earlier this year. This is the first of its kind combining interdisciplinary and global perspectives on digital well-being, with a look towards practical implementation for policymakers, designers, businesses and of course individuals! One page 12 of the report, you can read my thoughts and suggestions for integrating digital wellbeing into business models for sustainable, responsible and human-centred innovation. A special thanks goes to Daan Annemans and Matthew J. Dennis, the editors and masterminds behind this piece and to my co-authors Dr Anastasia Dedyukhina Ellen Gilbert Kenneth Schlenker Gunter Bombaerts Lily Frank Tom Hannes Laura Moradbakhti Anna Puzio Lyanne Uhlhorn Titiksha Vashist. We are excited to hear your thoughts, comments and feedback! #digitalwellbeing #responsibletechnology #responsibletech #digitalethics #responsibleinnovation #humancentered #humancenteredtechnology #wellbeing #philosophy

I have reduced my screen time by 70% in the last 6 months, and it’s had a profound impact on my quality of life: Here’s how: 1. I downloaded Opal App for iPhone. It’s not cheap: £89.99 for 1 year subscription (with no option to pay monthly, which is a bit annoying). Other are available: HazeOver NoPhone & Zario, but I’ve never tried them. 2. I allow myself 15 minutes - combined - per day on Instagram, Facebook & Tiktok. Opal blocks the 3 apps once my time cap is reached. This had the most impact on my reduction by far. 3. I allow myself 45 minutes per day on Twitter / X. I love Twitter and see it less mind-numbing than the others, but still doom-scroll-y enough that I need a hard stop. 4. Mail & LinkedIn automatically block at 19:00 each evening until 06:00 the following day. This stops me constantly checking my email every 2 minutes, which was a weird tick I developed and couldn’t seem to get over 5. At weekends, I get x10 chances to open Mail & Slack, for 5 minutes each time. Then it’s blocked. This allows me to switch off from work at weekends, something I am not great at. 6. In Settings > Screen Time > See All Activity, I switched off all notifications for Apps, unless it’s mission-critical. (Banking, WhatsApp, Deliveroo 👀). This means I try to access my phone when I want, not the other way round. Each block is set to ‘Deep Focus’, meaning I cannot override it. This seems to be important. My average screen time, at one point, was over 8 hours. I have no idea how I was managing to spend 1/3 of my life looking at my phone, but apparently I was 🤷 Now, it ranges between 2-3 hours per day, and most of that is using Mail & Messenger apps during the work day, so no issue with that. At weekends, my screen time is now usually under 1 hour I can’t tell you how much better I feel, and I would recommend the app to anyone looking to get their screen time down and recover their focus on things that aren’t digital.

Our CEO Kenneth Schlenker was invited to speak on this week's episode of Built for Change by Accenture. "Error 429: Human Request Limit Reached" (great title). We're excited to see business leaders pay attention to the issue we're working on at Opal. Listen here https://lnkd.in/eVXqCxBC "With the rapid acceleration of innovation, many people are feeling that technology is happening to them rather than for them. In fact, according to Accenture research, 41% of frequent tech users say that technology has complicated their lives just as much as it has simplified it. Because of this, businesses should not hide from the oncoming tide of people seeking control over their relationship with technology. The best approach for many organizations is to become part of the solution. In this episode, our guests will be Joe Hollier, Co-Founder of Light (creators of the Light Phone) - so great to reconnect! ; Katie Burke, Global Thought Leadership Lead for Accenture Song; and Kenneth Schlenker, Founder and C.E.O. of Opal."

Happy new year! The Average American is about to spend between 4 and 5 months of the year looking at their phone in 2024. Today we’re excited to release Opal’s very first annual Screen Time Report, answering several questions about the evolution of our digital diets. - How does Screen Time compares across U.S. cities and states? - How does the size of your phone inform how much time you spend on it? - What do food diets and digital diets have in common? - How does our digital diet influence our interpersonal relationships? - What are some of the measurable health impacts of excessive Screen Time? - How are different governments addressing Screen Time issues? - How is this growing awareness driving bottom-up actions? - What role will A.I. play in the evolution of Screen Time? - What does the future look like? Antoine Choussat and Kenneth Schlenker are giving you a rundown in this video and you can access the slides and additional information on screentimereport.org .
