We are thrilled to announce the publication of the second peer-reviewed journal article on EasyWhip® in Arthroscopy, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation (Arthroscopy Journals)! In this particular study, researchers examined the biomechanical properties of two suture techniques - the whip stitch and the locking stitch - across three suture systems (Winter Innovations, Arthrex, and CONMED) in cadaveric quadriceps tendon (QT) grafts for ACL reconstruction. Key Findings: - Both the whip stitch (WS) and locking stitch (LS) demonstrated adequate mechanical properties across all three suture systems. - Notably, each method demonstrated equivalent total elongation and ultimate failure. - The LS was the preferred method of stitch compared to the WS due to lower mean elongation and failure displacement. We once again extend our sincere gratitude to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for their support in making this research possible through our Phase I SBIR grant. And congratulations to our collaborators from the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) and the Andrews Research & Education Foundation and the authors Miguel Diaz, Eric A. Branch, MD, Jake Dunn, Tony Brothers, and Steve Jordan! Developing Simple Tools for Overlooked Areas in Surgery
About us
Winter Innovations is a medical device startup developing simple tools for overlooked areas in orthopedic surgery to improve patient outcomes. Winter Innovations has developed a patented two-part needle technology that fundamentally changes how stitching can be performed. This technology is the basis of the company’s flagship product called EasyWhip®, a specialty suturing needle that will simplify and standardize “whip stitching” in ligament and tendon reconstruction surgery. EasyWhip™ received 510(k) premarket clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May 2021.

In April, the Winter Innovations team traveled to Tampa, FL to host a biomechanics cadaver lab in collaboration with the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE). The focus was on examining graft preparation with EasyWhip®. After a productive day of Whippin’ It with EasyWhip®, our CEO and co-founder, Lia Winter, sat down with Dr. Neil Kumar, MD, MBA and Rachel Carlson, PA-C, ATC, to discuss some of their most memorable moments in the lab. This video captures their insights and feedback. We extend our sincerest gratitude to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for their support in making this research possible through our Phase II SBIR grant. Special thanks to Miguel Diaz for helping plan the study, and to Pablo Sanchez and Josue Layuno for their assistance in the lab. We deeply appreciate Dr. Kumar and Rachel Carlson for their hard work and participation in both the lab and the interviews! Check out the full video and more highlights from the lab on the Winter Innovations YouTube page: https://lnkd.in/eWtpdpnX We hope to see you again soon Tampa! 😉

We would like to congratulate Dr. Eric Lullove, DPM, CWSP, FFPM RCPS(Glasg) on his first surgical case with EasyWhip®! He successfully completed an Achilles tendon repair with our novel two-part needle, employing our patented WhipLock™ stitch. This method not only increases security of the repair, but also minimizes tissue damage by distributing the suture load (Diaz et al. 2024) and decreases stitching time. A key feature of using EasyWhip® with this technique is that the WhipLock™ stitch requires 50% fewer needle passes compared to a conventional Krackow stitch. Well-done, Dr. Lullove and congratulations on your first case with EasyWhip®! Are you ready to complete your first surgical case with EasyWhip®?
