The gap in LGBTQ+ identification among older adults. He shares, "You still see, for example, there are gaps in sort of population level. People who identify as LGBTQ...the older adults are less likely to identify as such publicly. And a lot of that's due to history. I mean, I don't think that magically people are changing. I think it's that younger generations are potentially more comfortable in sharing those things and responding to a survey question that asks about your sexual orientation, your gender identity, and marking that in a way that someone else will see it. And we see this playing out in sort of medical settings, this history of discrimination, and distrust...trying to understand how to navigate systems and how open to be and how that may or may not impact the care that your partner receives." Tune in to hear more about this important discussion on the intersection of identity, history, and healthcare. 🌈🎙️ In our latest podcast episode, we had an insightful conversation with Drew Picket about the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ older adults. As Drew poignantly stated, "The cohort of older adults who are also LGBT right now have lived through a lot—discrimination, stigmatization, medical challenges, and the HIV crisis. Their experiences and family structures often look different compared to their heterosexual counterparts. For instance, when it comes to caregiving, LGBT older adults are statistically less likely to have a spousal partner or an adult child to support them." Tune in to learn more about the distinct experiences and needs of LGBTQ caregivers and how we can better support them. 🏳️🌈❤️ Watch the full video here: https://buff.ly/4d1Xv9s #LGBTQCaregivers #SupportingOurElders #InclusiveCare

One of the questions we had when talking with HR professionals was, 'How are you helping your managers and executives connect with caregivers in your team?' 🗣️ It was insightful to hear from one HR executive who mentioned that while there’s a lot of focus on mental health 🧠, the training for managers to address caregiving needs is lacking. 🚫 Many companies are deeply concerned about mental health and well-being, directing significant resources towards these areas. However, what family caregivers really need is a conversation. 🗨️ They need the opportunity to talk about their caregiving role at home 🏡 and how it affects them at work 💼 Caregiving is often a silent topic 🤫, overshadowed by other issues. It’s crucial that we create spaces for these important conversations, allowing caregivers to feel supported and understood. Let’s make sure we’re not just funneling people into categories, but truly listening and providing the support they need. 📢🌟 Exciting highlights from our recent WCN Mastermind webinar on Supporting Working Family Caregivers! 🌟📢 Christy Yates shared insightful points on how companies are striving to support family caregivers across different levels and states. One HR leader emphasized the importance of finding the most generous state-provided benefits and replicating them company-wide, ensuring paid care support wherever possible. We also discussed the limitations of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). While FMLA allows employees to take time off, it doesn't mandate paid leave. This sparked conversations around equity and how companies can step up to offer paid support for their caregiving employees. Join us in our mission to create a more supportive and equitable workplace for all! 💼❤️ 👉 What support would you like to see for working family caregivers? Share your thoughts in the comments!
