The White Plains Youth Bureau Summer Leadership Medical Pathways Program, which offers local 9th and 10th grade students the opportunity to learn about careers in medicine, is back for Summer 2024! Earlier this week, the students saw firsthand what it takes to work on a Cardiac Surgery team. Thank you to Satecha DeFreitas, lead Physician Assistant, Stanlin Alexander, Chief Cardiac Perfusionist, Dr. William Jakobleff, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and their teams, who provided unforgettable simulations by exposing the students to our Heart-Lung Bypass machine, which temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery!

This week's #NurseDayThursday, Olivia Medico, RN, is a Westchester native and a nurse in White Plains Hospital’s Emergency Department! While Olivia dreamed of being a pharmacist at a young age, she later realized that she wanted a career that would allow her to build lasting connections with her patients. Olivia joined White Plains Hospital in 2016 as a Nurse Apprentice, which led to becoming a Nurse Tech in the ED in 2018, and an ED nurse after she received her BSN from Fairfield University. “I’m so grateful to have started my career here,” she shares. “I’ve looked up to so many of my peers for a very long time.” Olivia serves as a chair of the Emergency Department council and as a preceptor, helping to educate new nurses. “We’re a family, we’re always looking out for each other,” she explains. Her positive impact on her patients, colleagues and the Hospital at large were recognized when she was selected to receive the prestigious Bendheim Emergency Department Nurse of the Year Award during National Nurses Week in May. Thank you, Olivia, for all that you do for your patients and our Hospital – we are lucky to have you!

We've reached yet ANOTHER cardiac milestone here at White Plains Hospital! Dr. Judah Rauch, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and his team performed the first procedure in Westchester and the Hudson Valley using the AGENT™ Drug-Coated Balloon to treat a patient with coronary artery disease who was experiencing in-stent restenosis (ISR). This minimally invasive procedure helps to prevent previously stented arteries from re-narrowing and addresses a critical unmet need for patients with coronary artery disease as an alternative treatment option in the U.S. #WPHProud
