Today we celebrate #Juneteenth and the end of slavery in the US. While Juneteenth is a day of celebration, we also acknowledge how freedom and justice in the US has been hindered for Black people. Juneteenth came two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) that technically freed slaves. More than two years would pass until freedom reached the deepest part of the Confederacy when troops arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 to take control of the state and ensure all enslaved people be free. Today we celebrate and honor the people who fought then and are still fighting today for freedom - freedom from all forms of slavery and the right to an equal life.
