About us
We’re a nonprofit R&D lab that’s reimagining social media. Join us in building digital public spaces that connect people, embrace pluralism, and build community. We are researchers, engineers, designers, and community leaders. We want more healthy, flourishing spaces on the internet. We have two main strategies to achieve this: helping local communities across America create more flourishing digital spaces and developing prototypes for digital conversation with public service media organizations. We work by partnering and co-designing with community stewards (moderators, administrators) and public institutions. We’re in this to serve, remove obstacles to power, and make life significantly better for people, especially folks from underestimated communities. We think this work is essential for democracy.

⭐ Delighted to see this work featured in The Washington Post ⭐ . This newest research from New_ Public, in partnership with Center for Media Engagement - The University of Texas at Austin analyzed qualitative experiences from people on different platforms, to dig into what makes some networks more useful, pleasant, and community-building. . In my role as the visual designer on this piece, collaboration with data scientists, moderators, and real-life feedback has been a fascinatingly interdependent process. Furthermore, the feature this week reminds me that #interdisciplinary collaboration is truly how meaningful work gets done! https://lnkd.in/gg2vF7Cy #data #design #publicspaces

Great article in the Washington Post today on what it looks like when local social media goes right, featuring Vermont's Front Porch Forum and some new research (out today!) by Talia Stroud and our team at New_ Public. Here's what I said in the piece: “I think there’s a real social media fatalism that has set in, that it’s just irredeemably toxic and never going to get any better,” Pariser said. “The goal here is to demonstrate that local conversations don’t have to be toxic. That’s a result of the business model and how they’re designed.” This is great news for the prospects for healthy digital conversation and community in America -- Front Porch Forum demonstrates that it's possible to do online community differently, and well. And excited to build on this momentum at New_ Public. https://lnkd.in/eg4T9xsG

In The Washington Post this weekend, Will Oremus covers our new research on Front Porch Forum, in collaboration with Center for Media Engagement - The University of Texas at Austin. We learned that the members of FPF, a local platform in Vermont, consider it useful, valuable, informative, relevant and civic-minded. Especially compared to the dominant Big Tech apps and websites juicing us for data and masquerading as “town squares.”

Social media that is NOT a swamp is possible, and even exists today! It's fantastic to see New_ Public and Front Porch Forum getting more national press and attention! FPF has been a really successful example of non-toxic social media for almost 20 years now. And yes, better social media will look structurally different from today's mega-properties. Maybe not always exactly like FPF... but it's so critical to study and share these success stories to inform progress. Congratulations to the FPF team on building a great product and enduring successful business in a really tough field with aggressive global competitors, and thank you to Talia Stroud, Eli Pariser and New_ Public for the structured, rigorous work on how social media is, and can be designed and built, better! https://wapo.st/3SFzuNK

RESEARCH: Moderating a WhatsApp group can be a lot like parenting. Researchers found more benefits in creating different tailored tools that cater to the unique needs of each moderation style than having one universal tool. https://lnkd.in/gKnyCuE9

Since the pandemic, it’s more common than ever for churches to hold services online. But having a church that never meets in person is very different. The big question is: can we build close communities exclusively online, the same way as we do it in person?
Can a church exist exclusively on the internet?
