NSC is proud to feature Raquel Taylor as a 2024 graduate profile. Raquel may have started taking classes at NSC in 2004, but her time at North began much earlier at the age of 3 or 4, when her mom took classes at NSC and brought Raquel to the library. "I remember gazing up at the large papier-mâché Spider-Man hanging down from the ceiling, and just being in awe of how big the whole building was." Now, Raquel is graduating with her Associate of Arts DTA degree and will pursue a BA in Psychology with a minor in Spanish at the University of Arizona this coming Fall. "It feels like everything is finally coming full circle, and I am so grateful to be completing this first part of my journey back where it all started, at NSC!" Yesterday, we celebrated as 149 students graduated at GHC's campus at Stafford Creek Corrections Center! The graduates earned high school diplomas and equivalencies, completed construction trade apprenticeships, earned welding technology certificates, completed Business Management Associate of Applied Science degrees, and earned Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Degrees. 30 graduates were named President's Scholars. Meet Olivia, a student in our Fire Service Program. After graduating from high school and attending Western Washington University, Olivia's passion for firefighting led her to switch to Bates Technical College.   "There are so many people out there who believe that women have a place in the fire industry, and you just need to find those people who are going to support you, like the people here at Bates."   Olivia is driven to advocate for women in the fire service and to demonstrate that unconditional passion for others is at the heart of firefighting. We’re proud to support Olivia and all the incredible women pursuing careers in this field.

Yakima Valley College is leading the way in embedding research into STEM classes for community college students. “My appreciation as a scientist comes from the hard work and reward intrinsic to unveiling new discoveries,” says YVC Biology Instructor Jeremy Marion. “My ambition is to kindle a similar curiosity in my students.” Marion is one of several instructors creating more opportunities for students to engage in research projects in their courses, with the goal of helping boost the diversity of students who successfully pursue and enter STEM careers.
