Disability inclusion and accessibility in the workplace often leaves out individuals with high support needs. Employment is so vital to the livelihood of autistic individuals of all abilities. Yet in Washington State very rarely high support needs individuals ever experience employment. Please join Washington Autism Alliance on July 18th from 12-1 for a conversation with Dr. Abby George, BCBA-D and Miguel Smith, MSW about effective strategies that help promote meaningful inclusion and accessibility practices. #WAAutismAlliance #NeurodiversityEmployment

We expand access to healthcare, education and services for people w/ autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities.
About us
Washington Autism Alliance is a personal advocate and legislative champion for children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) & other developmental disabilities. What we do Our mission is to ensure that all children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD’s) & other developmental disabilities (DD’s) have every opportunity to thrive and become productive members of society. We do this by helping families access ASD & DD health insurance benefits, effective services in schools, and supportive community-based services, regardless of their personal financial situation. How we do it By providing pro bono guidance, counseling, coordination, training, resources, and legal support to families and professionals, to help them attain effective autism treatment and socially significant rehabilitative programs statewide. What your support makes possible Washington State has an estimated 15,500 children with ASD, and many of them are from low-income families. We want every one of them, rich or poor, to have an equal chance to thrive and succeed in life. With your support, WAAA can: Provide both full-service insurance navigation and education case management free of charge, enabling families in need all across Washington to receive critical health and education benefits to care for their autistic children. Expand our statewide network of parent partners and advocates, thereby shortening the time between a family’s need for support and receipt of that support. - See more at: http://www.washingtonautismadvocacy.org/updates/who-we-are/#sthash.M5bA7kxZ.dpuf

"The past three summers where I live, the temperatures got up to 110 degrees, record-highs for Washington State. The first summer, I had no AC, and for those summers, when that heat hit, I had to sleep on an inflatable mattress downstairs. It reminded me that I really don’t like summer, even though it was once my favorite season. It was great to be out of school, but as an adult, I can’t enjoy that benefit anymore. There are other reasons that summer can be a particularly tough time of the year for others on the autism spectrum like me." Enjoy Trevor's insightful Blog | Register to Join Drs. The Autism CARES (H.R. 7213) will be considered in the House Energy and Commerce Committee tomorrow morning. Please don't let them forget how important it is for autistic people who require lifetime, 24/7 care to be clearly provided for in the language of this bill this year.

When a person has a combination of two or more diagnoses or disabilities, they are considered to have co-occurring conditions. Autistic individuals often meet criteria for at least one additional psychiatric disorder. The National Institute of Health reports that ninety-one percent of children and thirty-one percent of adults were also diagnosed with one or more co-occurring diagnoses using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI). Join Dr. James Hammel and Dr. Shobhna Srivastava on May 23rd to learn more about Co-occurring diagnoses + Autism. https://lnkd.in/gpGk5qPB

We are often contacted by area clinics marketing services to the autism community. When the request is from a legitimate service provider, we include them in our online Resource Directory. But much to our dismay, there are a group of predatory practices popping up around the nation, with MD's and ND's on staff that claim to treat a wide range of diagnoses, including autism. They so cleverly camouflage their lack of evidence of efficacy and credibility. We hope you consider this TED Talk by Dr. Russ Lang when considering medical and biological interventions for autism. https://lnkd.in/gkKxQbz4 #WAAutismAlliance #WashingtonAutismAlliance #EmbraceAutism #AutismAcceptance

Of interest to parents of non-speaking or minimally speaking children. We’ll have more details shortly with a lunch and learn featuring non-speaking autistic youth and adults who spell to communicate.
I had the honor to speak with Stone K. yesterday. Stone, a non-speaker spells to communicate, eloquently, and describes his yearning to learn at (public) school but had never been given the opportunity. I’ll be working with Stone and his dad to change this opportunity gap here in Washington. #WashingtonAutismAlliance #WAAutismAlliance #EducationForAll
