If you haven't read this article that came out in the The New York Times this morning, it is a MUST read. It's one of the best articles in a long time on the broken PBM model and more importantly how it 'breaks' the lives of every working American. The writers use simple commonsense examples which the PBM lobbies keep trying to obfuscate and explain around. The circuitous, just trust us, explanations are simply lies from the Industry. The most poignant comment from the PBM industry is the finger pointing to Pharma being the problem. As the Wegovy/Novo Nordisk example shows, they finger point publicly while both of their economic models collude to prevent competition and we are left holding the bag. They have a symbiotic relationship and both are EQUALLY to blame for different reasons. The upshot is that neither party serves the American people. It's time to end the monopolies because not only do we pay more, we end up with massive single points of failure. Hackers took out one of the biggest players in the healthcare transaction business, Change Healthcare (UNH), in what seems an instant. The attack brought to light that UNH didn't have the backend security infrastructure to limit the damage to what should have been a short outage instead of days and days and apparently millions of dollars in ransom. In case you are wondering about the economics of the situation, who in their right mind would go back even if they were to bring their systems back on line? I am guessing they couldn't pay companies enough to do that. I think it's time to write down that $13B acquisition of Change Healthcare. I would be upset if I were a shareholder, but I'm not. Just another day in the world of market manipulation of drug prices, today it's the almost $100B blockbuster Revlimid(lenalidomide). Dr. Knopf from VIVIO was part of the team that published this paper that just came out about Bristol Myers Squibb/Celgene's blatant market manipulation and use of REMS programs to prevent competition. The gut punch is "Although manufacturers report price hikes responding to research and development costs, the report contradicts this. Lenalidomide's research and development was funded mostly by federal grants to Rockefeller University (for thalidomide)" When you watch Pharma CEOs testifying to congress, remember that the truth is likely the opposite of what they say because it pays better to do that than to develop new drugs, "The Committee noted in 2021 that the world's 14 largest drug companies spent more compensating executives and investors than on research and development." The next time you see another lawsuit from Pharma against the American people over the Inflation Reduction Act, send your disgust to their CEOs and your elected officials.
