It is with profound sadness I share the passing of Dr. Lowell Goldsmith a friend, mentor, visionary, extraordinary human being and co-founder of VisualDx. It goes without saying that Lowell’s remarkable contributions to the field of dermatology and medical education and to this company’s mission have left an indelible mark on the healthcare community and beyond. I first met Lowell when he accepted me into the dermatology residency at the University of Rochester as he was the chair of the department. I remember that first interaction 30+ years ago well because he did not ask me any questions about dermatology or why I was interested in dermatology. That was atypical! Instead, Lowell wanted to discuss what recent novel I read, and we spent quite a while talking about Tom Wolfe’s Bonfire of the Vanities. Then, Lowell turned to Dr. Larry Weed, my mentor at UVM and the founder of the SOAP note. Lowell did not know Larry and so asked me about how computers would change medicine. Immediately, I was struck by how different this man was from any of the dermatology leaders I had met. Sparing the details, eventually we together envisioned a future in clinical decision support guided by visualization and the right medical information at the right time. It’s Lowell’s curiosity and openness to new ideas that is the answer to why VisualDx exists. Rather than sharing his lengthy resume in detail here (Chair, Dean, Editor in Chief JID, Fitzpatrick’s Textbook etc), what was most impressive was how Lowell could accomplish so much yet at the same time know the details of your children, and all the people in the department including lab techs, secretaries and the janitors. It’s rare when a brilliant person can be so personable, connected and deeply care about others! Thank you, Lowell, for your curiosity, optimism and true warmth that touched so many.

About five years ago, I had a conversation with Ariana Gordillo De Vivero from the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics. Ariana discussed the challenges faced by underserved patients and families at NAFC locations across the United States—those who often require basic care and health education to work, support their families, and live with dignity. She also recounted the dedication of MD, NP, and PA volunteers who, despite scarce resources, devoted their free time to serving these individuals. Ariana and I believed that a partnership between NAFC and VisualDx could significantly benefit both patients and clinicians, but we needed additional support. Now, five years later, with the support of CeraVe L'Oréal and the Care For All Philanthropic Mission, we have achieved an impact beyond what we imagined at our initial meeting. Thanks to CeraVe Care For All, VisualDx can provide disease education and technology to NAFC clinicians and their patients through licenses, educational webinars, resources, and initiatives like World Skin Health Day. This past Monday, we offered dermatology education to volunteer clinicians at NAFC locations and met with patients whose stories inform the resources and education we develop for the clinicians who care for them. We began to see the impact. However, the pursuit of impact and awareness about skin health should not conclude with Monday's World Skin Health Day—it is merely the start. I urge all my clinician colleagues and partners to engage with your communities, volunteer your time, and use your talents to assist our communities. Question: True or false...people with darker skin tones do not have to wear sunscreen. Answer: "True!" *P.S. The correct answer is false This was the start of just one of many conversations I had on July 8th while at the Brooklyn Free Clinic celebrating #WorldSkinHealthDay with CeraVe (L'Oréal). On the 8th, team members of CeraVe, L'Oreal, and Brooklyn Free Clinic got together to promote World Skin Health Day, a global initiative led by The International League of Dermatological Societies and International Society of Dermatology to raise awareness about the importance of skin health. Monday's event provided the Brooklyn community with education, skin health products, and skin checks. With the help of CeraVe and VisualDx, students at Downstate Health Sciences University were also able to get trained on skin health and how to leverage evidence-based technology to help with clinical decision-making. I got the opportunity to connect with community members about the importance of skin health and how to access dermatological care. It was evident that there is a strong lack of access to this specialty with many saying that "everyone thinks it's all about botox and fillers". However, this couldn't be farther from the truth. For example, while skin cancer affects people of all colors, those with darker skin tones are often diagnosed later when it's harder to treat according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Our skin is our biggest organ and an important indicator of our general health. One of my new friends - let's call her "A" - is a 65 year old breast cancer survivor who has to deal with the difficulties of lymphedema on her arms and dry skin. "A" and I share something in common, both of us had never gotten a skin check. But on Monday, "A" would be able to schedule a free skin check for the same day. She and I talked about the high costs of healthcare and lack of access for those most in need. However, now "A" was able to connect with the Brooklyn Free Clinic and left feeling excited for her first skin check. I can't wait to see how other members of the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) celebrated World Skin Health Day across the nation! There aren't enough words for me to express my whole-hearted gratitude for everyone that made this event a success. 🔍 A True Story of Early Diagnosis with VisualDx 🔍 Meet Wanda*. A while back, Wanda noticed a small lesion on her finger. Busy with her job and personal life, she brushed it off. A friend suggested a home remedy: wrapping floss around it to make it fall off. Wanda tried it, hoping to avoid the inconvenience of a doctor’s visit. To her dismay, the lesion came back larger and more painful within two weeks. A quick Google search revealed it could be squamous cell carcinoma. Realizing she couldn’t ignore the problem any longer, Wanda sought medical help. She went to urgent care where the nurse practitioner was unsure about the lesion. The NP asked to take a photo using VisualDx, and Wanda eagerly agreed. Using DermExpert, the NP quickly identified the correct diagnosis: a lobular capillary hemangioma. VisualDx provided the NP with a synopsis of the diagnosis, additional images, what to look for, the best tests, therapy options, and even a printout for Wanda. Did you know that 47% of dermatologists and dermatology residents report inadequate training on skin conditions in dark skin? This gap is even more pronounced in non-dermatologists. Disease appearance can drastically differ in patients with darker skin, leading to frequent misdiagnoses. VisualDx has been a pioneer in addressing this issue. An independent study published in July 2020 recognized VisualDx for its high proportion of pathology images on dark skin compared to other resources.
