We are excited to present the latest installment of our Veteran Conversation Series, the 11th. This month, we have the privilege of speaking with Wayne Rippy, a United States Army Reserve veteran and VSO employee. He joins us from Wilmington, North Carolina outside of the Battleship North Carolina to discuss his time in the Army Reserve and to share advice on the Army Reserve and civilian life. Wayne successfully combined both his civilian career and his role in the reserves while gaining important lessons along the way. The most poignant lesson Wayne received was the importance of showing up and getting your work done rooted in the saying “Hurry up and wait.” This concept echoes VSO’s 4th Principle: “We will not waste time.” At VSO, we are committed to empowering veterans like Wayne with the resources and support needed to succeed in civilian careers. VSO is proud to announce this month's Executive Highlight! Meet Karla Hester, VSO's VP of Operations. We asked Karla a few questions about VSO and her personal life: Q: What is something you love about VSO? A: What I appreciate most about VSO is that one is constantly learning AND teaching, no matter the position one holds within the company. I have learned new things from every level in this small company. I am fascinated by our innate ability to support each other without question and teach each other without pain. This practice helps support my favorite VSO First Principle, “We will not waste time”. The more we learn every step of the way, the less time we spend trying to ‘reinvent the wheel’. Our most valuable commodity is time and VSO does a great job using it wisely, while growing steadily. Q: What keeps you busy outside of VSO? A: When not enjoying cross-country road trips with my walking encyclopedia husband, Tim, and our 2 children, I find great joy in helping non-profits be more efficient and capitalize on opportunities to provide great value to those they serve. In my leftover leisure time, I love playing strategy board games, complicated cake decorating and a great bottle of vodka on the rocks, while living in the great state of Texas. The U.S Government aims to facilitate most military-to-civilian transitions, yet a recent study by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) reveals that there are significant threats in current support programs, such as a focus on education rather than employment. The report conclusively recommends that the U.S Government should conduct an evaluation to reduce inefficiencies and improve performance. Our CEO, Stephen O'Keefe, shares his thoughts on the GAO study shared by RAND. VSO is proud to announce this month’s veteran highlight! Meet John Everett, a Marine Corps Veteran turned Sr. Solutions Engineer. We asked John some questions about his life in the Marines and how he found his way to VSO: Q: What was your life in the Marines like? A: I enlisted right out of high school as a Tactical Data Network Specialist, a fancy title for Marine Corps IT guy. I was sent to an infantry battalion in North Carolina where I deployed to Iraq in 2006 and Afghanistan in 2008. After back-to-back combat tours I spent my last year in Okinawa, Japan serving as the Network Chief for 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. Q: Why did you join VSO and how has the experience been for you? A: One of the officers I served with works at VSO and reached out to me about a project he was working on. I transitioned to VSO full-time in March of 2022. VSO has allowed me to leverage my experience as a system administrator and small unit leader to deliver exceptional results to our clients. It’s easy to post core values on a website but seeing an entire organization exhibit them every day is truly remarkable and makes me proud to be part of the VSO team!
