    Southwest Virginia 🤍

I’m thankful to partner with our local law enforcement agencies to protect our children throughout the Commonwealth. This past week, I attended Virginia Rules camps throughout Southwest Virginia on behalf of Virginia Office of the Attorney General to help administer fingerprints and DNA samples that parents can keep on hand in case of an emergency. AG Jason Miyares and our entire community outreach team want to make sure our families have access to this resource. Law enforcement agencies throughout Southwest Virginia will be distributing these throughout the summer and as children go back to school this fall.

  • Attorney General Miyares Kicks Off Virginia Rules Camp Season Attorney General Jason Miyares announced the start of another season of Virginia Rules Camps, organized by the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and Virginia law enforcement agencies in collaboration with local community stakeholders. Virginia Rules Camps offer young people a unique opportunity to learn about Virginia law while enjoying enriching outdoor activities and building positive relationships with local law enforcement officers. This year, OAG expanded the camp to over 15 locations, ranging from the City of Richmond to Tazewell County to Prince William County. Virginia Rules Camp combines traditional summer camp activities–such as swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, and archery–with daily lessons from the Virginia Rules curriculum. Under Attorney General Miyares’ leadership, the Virginia Rules program has been enhanced to cover the dangers of fentanyl and counterfeit drugs in a One Pill Can Kill lesson. This summer, Virginia Rules Camps are launching in Operation Ceasefire cities like Petersburg, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News. • Thanks to Brandon Wrobleski and the team of incredible professionals who assisted with the exoneration of Marvin Grimm.

Senior Assistant Attorney General/Special Investigations Section Chief

It was a career-defining honor to write Attorney General Miyares' brief in support of the exoneration of Marvin Grimm. Marvin served 45 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, and I was so grateful that the Virginia Court of Appeals agreed and issued Mr. Grimm a writ of actual innocence last week. Marvin had an incredible team of attorneys working alongside him for years, including Jeffrey Horowitz, Angelique Ciliberti, and Glenn Pogust from Arnold & Porter, founder and director emeritus of the Innocence Project Peter Neufeld, Susan Friedman, Tim Gumkowski, and so many more. I met Marvin for the first time yesterday and I was overwhelmed by his positivity and graciousness despite what he went through. His story is powerful, and I'm humbled to have witnessed it unfold up close.

  • Attorney General Miyares Secures Third Writ of Actual Innocence Based on new DNA evidence, the OAG successfully petitioned the Virginia Court of Appeals to exonerate Marvin Grimm from a 1976 murder conviction. The Court agreed with the OAG and attorneys for Mr. Grimm that modern DNA and toxicology evidence excluded Mr. Grimm from any involvement in the death of the three-year-old victim. Grimm’s exoneration is the second exoneration secured by Attorney General Miyares in two months, and the third obtained with support from the Miyares administration. On May 21, 2024, after Attorney General Miyares filed a notice in support of petitioner Keshawn Duffy, the Virginia Court of Appeals exonerated Mr. Duffy from wrongful convictions and two consecutive life sentences.
