What a great way to wrap up the week! Jim Powers, life science leader and Chairman of the Virginia Bioscience Foundation, spent time with John Newby while receiving his 2024 Outstanding Contributions to Bioscience Award over coffee in Charlotte, NC. The award, the highest honor bestowed by Virginia Bio, was established in 2013 to recognize individuals, companies, organizations, events, discoveries or collaborations in the biosciences exemplifying the excellence, variety and dynamism of the Virginia biosciences community. An innovator with over 30 years’ experience launching and building life science companies, Jim served as HemoShear’s chairman and CEO, until retiring in 2022. Prior to HemoShear, Jim was Executive Vice President of PRA Health Sciences, where he played a major role in growing PRA into one of the top five global clinical research organizations. Jim has served on several boards, including Virginia Bio’s, and currently serves as Chairman of the Virginia Bioscience Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that promotes interest among K-12 students in bioSTEM studies and careers, with a particular focus on minority and disadvantaged students. THANK YOU JIM for all that you continue to do for Virginia's biotechnology ecosystem! https://lnkd.in/e9kpbd7x #lifesciencevirginia #oustandingleader

A visit with one of Virginia's innovation leaders! Earlier this week I had the pleasure of visiting Jeff Conroy to present him with Virginia Bio's 2024 Outstanding Contributions to Bioscience Award. (Jeff was recognized at the May #THRiVE conference in Alexandria but he was unable to attend in person.) His years-in-the-making achievement with Embody, Inc.'s acquisition by Zimmer Biomet is but only one accomplishment and contribution Jeff has made to Virginia's biotech ecosystem, and he continues to give back. We again thank Jeff for his years of leadership at Virginia Bio, his instrumental support of the Virginia Catalyst, and his continuing mentorship of young life science companies. We are all the better for your presence in our community! https://lnkd.in/eSb-V-gV
