Today on the VinePair Podcast: It's OK if 'The Bear' Doesn't Care About Wine Much of the wine press might be up in arms about the lack of wine in Hulu's hit show The Bear, but Adam Teeter, Joanna Sciarrino, and Zachary Geballe don't really see the issue. For one, wine just doesn't tend to work well on screen, and for two, it's not as if there haven't been plenty of other shows that have heavily featured wine, for better or worse. 🔊 Apple: https://lnkd.in/e53Zp8px 🔊 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eauYGrX5 Listen to a preview 👇

Why Are We So Obsessed With the NBA’s Wine Aficionados? In June, as the Boston Celtics celebrated a record-breaking 18th title with a triumph over the Dallas Mavericks, the obligatory locker room Champagne drenching served as cover photo for many media outlets. A combination of Moët & Chandon — featured via its coveted role as the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s official Champagne — and others soaked the revelers as plays were recounted and the Larry O’Brien trophy made its rounds. While such scenes are common in just about any sport, the NBA has received copious coverage in the press for its fine-wine fever in recent years. Its aficionados and vintners have graced the pages of just about every #wine or sports publication in some way or another. There’s no denying the obvious take: The NBA is obsessed with wine. But by panning out to view the phenomenon from a level removed, another curious trend pops into the frame: the press’s obsession with covering the topic. Today on the VinePair Podcast: Does Generational Pandering Still Work? As Gen Z moves more into the forefront of drinks culture, brands throughout the industry are trying to craft products and pitches that they think will resonate. Adam Teeter, Joanna Sciarrino, and Zachary Geballe discuss whether or not that kind of generational pandering actually works, and whether it makes sense to target the youngest section of legal-age drinkers potentially at the expense of more stable, established demographics. 🔊 Apple: https://lnkd.in/emcpQQ6U 🔊 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eg-P7Hux Listen to a preview 👇

Today on the VinePair Podcast: What Can We Learn From European Drinks Culture? Adam Teeter has returned from his European vacation, and discusses with Joanna Sciarrino and Zachary Geballe some of what he experienced and learned along the way, including whether the world's best bars are worth a visit, why wine lists are usually hyper-local, and the unexpected places where dining with a young child can work out. 🔊 Apple: https://lnkd.in/dwtSgitr 🔊 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/dC3XhfHU Listen to a preview 👇

🍷 Why Is the U.S. Wine Industry Ignoring Central America and the Caribbean? Picture this: a region boasting a population of over 92 million, an expanding middle class, and soaring #wine purchases. Where can we find this rosé-hued economic region amidst the global effects of climate change, uprooting of vineyards, and declining wine sales? Is this paradise? Almost. It’s the Caribbean Basin, defined here as Central America plus the Caribbean island nations. Some areas, like the Dominican Republic (a.k.a. the D.R.), have for years enjoyed steadily increasing sales, in both value and volume — the D.R.’s annual wine market is now almost $80 million. Regional demand for wine has exploded recently, and that vinous thirst comes from Basin residents themselves, not just the many tourists pouring in from traditional wine-drinking countries. A burgeoning interest in premium, organic, and artisanal wines stands out when looking at Basin residents. And yet, all but the biggest U.S. producers appear to be ignoring this market, which literally lies in North America’s front yard. Read Charlie Leary (李嘉立) PhD for VP Pro: https://lnkd.in/e6_cyHxp

Today on the VinePair Podcast: Can Restaurants Rein in Wine Prices? Joanna Sciarrino and Zachary Geballe are joined by VinePair contributor David Foss to discuss the current state of wine pricing in restaurants: why many restaurants, particularly in trendier cities and neighborhoods, are marking up their wine to previously-unseen levels, particularly in places without a dedicated wine or beverage professional. 🔊 Apple: https://lnkd.in/e2tJdqc3 🔊 Spotify: https://lnkd.in/eeNy4FeW Listen to a preview 👇

Despite global #wine consumption trailing behind that of beer and spirits, wine isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Despite pervasive doom and gloom regarding the future of the industry, the beverage remains a cornerstone of culture all over the world, especially in nations that have produced it for eons like France and Italy. Outside Europe, consumption remains relatively high, especially here in the United States where Americans down an impressive 935 million gallons every year: https://lnkd.in/ePsA7x6P 📝 Olivia White 🌍 Sara Pinsonault

The Economics of a Martini at 5 Top Bars, Visualized by Rich Manning A classic Martini carries several cues that convey sophistication and elegance. The timeless angular glass. The glassy liquid. The garnish’s pop of color. But behind the scenes, all these enticing little details stem from something unseen by guests as they sip the drink with pinkies extended: the bar’s cash flow. The cost of the glassware, the price of the liquor, the wage paid to the person that kept the glass cold until the last possible moment and built the drink: these are the elements that determine the cost of a Martini. It’s a number that must be high enough to make a profit, yet low enough to keep customers happy. Whether a bar can hit this target consistently can determine its success or even its survival. This target can also look wildly different in an expensive city like New York compared to a relatively cost-effective community like Phoenix. So, let’s take a peek behind the curtain and find out why your Martini costs what it does: https://lnkd.in/e2Yr--pD
