One year ago today, parts of the Hawaiian island of Maui were in flames. The loss for Maui residents—of life, of property, of history and a way of life—was overwhelming. The Hawaii air tour community sprang into action to support their neighbors in desperate need. These volunteers loaded up their aircraft and started flying above damaged roads to bring supplies, information, and relief to a devastated community. The cargo flights by air tour operators went on for days, delivering more than 30,000 pounds of emergency supplies. One year later, Hawaii’s air tour community—those who fly, fix, supply, and operate air tour helicopters—haven’t forgotten. They’re still here, providing assistance whenever and wherever they’re needed. One year later, they still stand with their ohana. Maui Strong. Safety culture is shaped by employees’ trust in their ability to report potential safety issues without fear of retribution. But what about an organization’s trust in its employees? How does that affect safety culture? Effective safety reporting depends on listening to everyone in your operation, VAI Senior Director of Safety Christopher Hill explains in this month’s Spotlight on Safety. Fair use.
