Last week, the Supreme Court of Virginia issued a scathing opinion in a case involving potential juror misconduct in Eckard v. Commonwealth, Record No. 230333. Eckard's attorney on appeal failed to make sure that the Court of Appeals of Virginia received the full record, including a written argument about how a juror was threatened to convict Eckard, even though the juror did not want to find him guilty. The Supreme Court of Virginia affirmed the convictions, finding that Eckard's attorney failed to properly raise the issue for the Court of Appeals to remedy the issue. This is why it's important for you to find an attorney you can count on to make sure the appellate courts have everything they need to fully review your case. Eckard may have other remedies, but it's better to get an attorney you can trust in the first place. https://lnkd.in/eSgBy5pD

Last week, in a published order the Supreme Court of Virginia held that John Gaskins was not going to receive credit for nearly 10 months he spent in a Maryland jail even though a Virginia detainer was the reason he was incarcerated. The Court of Appeals of Virginia issued 21 opinions, mostly in criminal cases. In Jones v. Commonwealth the Court of Appeals held that the police did not violate Jones's Fourth Amendment rights when an officer withheld his license and asked whether he had any illegal items in his car. In other cases, the Court of Appeals rejected several arguments made by defendants because their counsel did not make the correct arguments to the trial court. When it comes to civil and criminal trials and appeals, know that your counsel is ready to preserve your rights for appeal and up to date on the law to make the most persuasive arguments. https://lnkd.in/eSgBy5pD

Portsmouth Redevelopment & Housing Authority* and key criminal, domestic, and civil cases such as *Sechrist v. Com.* on appellate rights, *Corpin v.
