Summer Fellow Highlight!!
Meet Brisa! UWBA hires Summer Fellows each summer to learn about and inspire our work in the Bay Area. Brsia will be working on our Community Impact team for the next few months. Learn a little more about Brisa below!
Where are you from?
"When introducing myself, I like to say the Bay Area. I’ve been living in Menlo Park my entire life while attending schools in Palo Alto. Additionally, I’ve spent much of my upbringing in neighboring cities like Redwood City, San Jose, etc."
What is something you were doing before this that you loved and or are proud of?
"Last summer, I was given the privilege to travel to Peru to work as an Omprkash Social Justice Volunteer through the University of California, Davis. I worked with a team on various projects to support children, mothers, and elders in the community and strengthened my skills in outreach and program development. In particular, I heavily contributed to a new project called “Mujeres Unidas'' which aimed to support the mothers within the town of Quilcas."
If you could have any food in the whole world, what would it be?
"Although I am fascinated with trying new foods within different cultures, my favorite food is a regional dish from my part of Mexico, Yucatan. Panuchos consist of a refried tortilla, stuffed with refried beans, and topped with chicken, pickled onions, avocado, cabbage, and tomato. This dish is very special to me not only due to its nostalgic effect but also because I can only taste “real panuchos” when I visit my family in Mexico."
How would you explain what you will do at UWBA to a four-year-old?
"Every year, UWBA makes a special book that is meant to help people learn more about the possible solutions to issues faced by the community. This book makes it easier for people to make clear decisions on what they are voting on, before doing so. People helping create this book will work closely with different leaders of public issues."
What was the reason you decided to join UWBA?
"After witnessing the positive impact of collective efforts in improving the lives of those I served as a volunteer, I strived to find a new opportunity where my passions give me the platform to help make change. As an aspiring lawyer, UWBA combines my drive for human rights with my interest in policy work. In addition, UWBA allows me to learn more about non-profit work, connect with like-minded people, and enhance my advocacy abilities."
