Have out-of-town visitors coming to Seattle this summer - or want play tourist for half a day? Erik Lacitis of the The Seattle Times shares a half-day driving tour of Seattle that captures the City's most Instagrammable places — all in one day. Spoiler alert: it includes a trip to Uwajimaya 😀
About us
Uwajimaya is one of the largest Asian gift & grocery retailers in the Pacific Northwest. Founded in 1928 in Tacoma, Washington by Fujimatsu Moriguchi, the business has grown from a small mom & pop Japanese store to a tourist destination as well as local favorite with four stores in Seattle, Bellevue, Renton and Beaverton. We are known for our wide selection of Asian groceries and gift items and our high quality seafood, meat, and produce selection. Our reputation is built on being known as a pan-Asian information specialist and part of our mission is to educate the customer on various aspects of Asian culture, particularly in relation to food. Uwajimaya's pre-eminence among Asian stores comes from its use of modern technology, its emphasis on cleanliness and its adherence to its business philosophy.

The Uwajimaya team along with Consul General & Mrs. Makoto Iyori are pleased to welcome Uwajima City Mayor, Mr. Fumiaki Okahara and the adorable Mikyan to Seattle! Uwajimaya will be showcasing special seafood and citrus delicacies of the Ehime region and holding live Bluefin tuna cuttings at all our stores. Fun fact: Uwajima city, Japan is where founder Fujimatsu Moriguchi learned his fish trade before immigrating to the Pacific Northwest in the 1920s.

While the NHL Winter Classic was held a few days ago (Kraken 3- Vegas 0!), the rink was kept open and various community groups invited to come skate. So today, several Seattle Uwajimaya team members joined other Chinatown International-District community members and many elementary school students to ice skate on the NHL rink in our MLB stadium! Thank you Seattle Kraken for including Uwajimaya and the CID Community in the Winter Classic festivities!

Uwajimaya has been a part of the Pacific Northwest community since it first started in Tacoma, WA in 1928. After WWII, the company moved to Seattle - just blocks from its current location - and has been fortunate to be part of Seattle's Chinatown-International District community for over 75 years. Thank you Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell for recognizing Uwajimaya's contributions and commitment to Seattle!
