For the first time in six years, the Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count by Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority logged a decline in the number of people living on the streets, including a significant drop in homeless veterans. Data released Friday speak to the heart of U.S.VETS’ mission and signal progress in the charge to end #veteran #homelessness. Among findings, the estimated number of 2,991 homeless veterans is down 23% from 2023.

Serving Those Who Served
About us
U.S.VETS is the largest nonprofit organization with boots on the ground to combat America’s veteran homeless crisis head-on. Our holistic approach provides housing, mental health and career programs, and supportive services to help veterans rebuild and thrive. With 40 residential and service sites nationwide, U.S.VETS is uniquely positioned to help veterans and their families successfully transition to civilian life. We provide services to over 3,000 veterans a day. Each year, we help 4,000 veterans a year find housing and connect over 1,000 veterans a year with full-time employment. These struggling veterans represent sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Each has served our country. We share both the pride and problems of this nation’s military servicemen and women and believe we have an obligation to help protect and serve those who have served and protected us. Because of this, we are committed to helping veterans in need. There is a growing generation of veterans with new challenges to face. In the past decade, two million troops have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. As they return home, many will experience challenges adjusting back to civilian life. Many returning troops suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression and anxiety. Additionally, some individuals have suffered a probable traumatic brain injury during deployment. The need for support for our nation’s veterans will only continue to increase. Learn how you can help.

We are deeply disheartened by today’s Supreme Court ruling in #JohnsonVGrantsPass which effectively criminalizes #homelessness. No one should be arrested or fined for sleeping outside when they have no other option. We cannot end homelessness by punishing the people experiencing it. Now more than ever, we need to recommit to intentional solutions that provide our veterans and anyone else experiencing homelessness access to stable housing and the support services to maintain it. #scotus #housingnothandcuffs

LA State Historic Park—with its city skyline vistas and location just minutes from our national office—hosted LA Pride in the Park this month, offering a scenic backdrop for U.S.VETS to raise awareness within LGBTQIA+ communities about services to help veterans manage social, mental, and medical stressors. U.S.VETS is dedicated to providing individualized support including preventative care to help all veterans live with dignity and independence. Led by our Aging Services staff, the day’s community engagement and visibility sparked new connections, and raised critical funds toward Steps for Vets, U.S.VETS’ annual 5K fundraising event to prevent and end veteran homelessness. #ServingThoseWhoServed #HonorUSVETS

U.S.VETS, a member of the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF VETERAN SERVICE AGENCIES (CAVSA), joined fellow service providers in Sacramento this week when lawmakers declared June California Veterans Awareness Month, acknowledging CAVSA for ongoing work on behalf of veterans. Through housing, coordinated support for veterans with risk factors that can lead to suicide, counseling for post-traumatic stress and substance use disorders, career services and more, CAVSA members address veterans’ needs statewide. U.S.VETS CEO Steve Peck, also the CAVSA Board president, accepted the resolution with leaders of CAVSA member agencies, CAVSA Executive Director Chuck Helget, and California Assemblymembers Eloise Reyes and Pilar Schiavo. #servingthosewhoserved #honorUSVETS

In this time of reflection honoring those who gave their lives in service to this nation, one annual tradition in Inglewood celebrated the life and service of Robert Barajas, a 96-year-old WWII and Vietnam War veteran and resident at U.S.VETS — Inglewood. Barajas was surrounded by elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, State Sen. Steven Bradford and Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts, as he received the Service Appreciation Award at the 75th Annual Inglewood Memorial Day Service. He's one of 100 older veterans in a three-year pilot project through the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) Veterans Support to Self-Reliance Pilot Program. U.S.VETS received a grant through the program to enhance a web of critical services for aging veterans in Los Angeles County and U.S.VETS Inland Empire. #servingthosewhoserved #honorusvets #aginginplace

CalVet Secretary Lindsey Sin was on hand today at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles campus as part of a groundbreaking ceremony for 87 new permanent homes for veterans in need. Veteran housing at the campus is being built in four phases, with 237 homes already completed and the development plan calling for at least 1,200 permanent supportive units. CalVet is partnering with the California Department of Housing & Community Development and others in the project. Funding for the campus includes $51.8 million from the Veterans Housing and Homelessness Prevention program. In the fourth photo, shown left to right are: CalVet Undersecretary Keith Boylan, CalVet Secretary Lindsey Sin, Congressman Adam Schiff, and U.S.VETS CEO Stephen Peck.

“We are here to change lives.” That was the message from our CEO Steve Peck when he accepted the Jerald Washington Memorial Founders’ Award from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV) this week. “We will continue until there are no more veterans on the street.” Steve received the highest honor bestowed by the homeless veteran assistance community. The award honors the memory of Jerald Washington, a former organizer of veteran assistance programs and co-founder of NCHV. #servingthosewhoserved #endveteranhomelessness #honorUSVETS
