It’s crucial to recognize that workers who have previously experienced heat illness are indeed more vulnerable. Additionally, certain clothing and protective gear worn by workers can exacerbate the risk of heat-related illnesses. As an authorized OSHA Training Institute Education Center, we highlight the following points to safety leaders: Heat Acclimatization: We encourage you to implement heat acclimatization programs for new workers. Gradually exposing them to higher temperatures helps build tolerance and reduces susceptibility to heat-related issues. Training and Awareness: Ensure workers receive proper training on recognizing signs and symptoms of heat illness. Educate them about the importance of staying hydrated, taking breaks, and seeking shade during hot conditions. Risk Factors: Highlight specific risk factors, such as prolonged outdoor work, age (older adults are more prone), and pre-existing health conditions. Workers falling into these categories need extra precautions. Clothing Choices: Advise workers to choose lightweight, breathable clothing that allows heat dissipation. Properly fitted personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to prevent overheating. Remember, proactive measures can significantly reduce the impact of heat-related illnesses on workers.
