Early this month, President Biden signed a bill reauthorizing the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) through September 30, 2028. For 50 years, USFA has been working for a fire safe America. “Across the country — and around the world — our communities are experiencing the devastating effects of fire on our most vulnerable populations. We are also seeing intensified wildfires that are no longer limited to the west coast or the forests. It is the mission of the USFA to ensure that firefighters are prepared to prevent or respond to fire whenever and wherever it occurs and that individuals understand the fire threat and take actions to make themselves savable." Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, U.S. Fire Administrator. As we look to the future, the reauthorization of USFA and the AFG Grants and SAFER grants, give us the opportunity to continue our steadfast and ever-growing commitment to keeping America fire safe. #FireServiceOneVoice

About us
Welcome to the official LinkedIn page of the U.S. Fire Administration! As an entity of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency, the mission of the U.S. Fire Administration is to provide national leadership to foster a solid foundation for our fire and emergency services stakeholders in prevention, preparedness and response. America’s fire losses today represent a dramatic improvement from more than 40 years ago. In 1971, our nation lost more than 12,000 residents and 250 firefighters to fire. Acting to stop these tragic losses, Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act in 1974. It created the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy (NFA). Since that time, through data collection, public education, research and training efforts, USFA has helped to reduce fire deaths and make our communities and residents safer.

Conservation X Labs, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting technology and innovation, is launching the Western North America component of the Fire Grand Challenge on August 8th, 2024. The Fire Grand Challenge is an open innovation competition that brings together Indigenous, community, and place-based knowledge with cutting-edge science and technology to create solutions that will help us change how we live with fire. Potential solutions that will be considered for funding include: 1. Profitable treatment methods at a landscape level. 2. Creating fire modeling for prescribed fire. 3. Restoration of and monitoring for areas severely degraded by wildfire. See below for more information about the challenge or to support and/or to apply for funding.

Recent research findings highlight the need to carefully assess adjustments to current SCBA weight limits to ensure firefighter safety and efficiency, especially considering the potential increase in weight from additional features. Published in Ergonomics, the latest peer-reviewed journal article authored by FSRI Research Engineer Richard Kesler and Director of Research Gavin Horn, with the Illinois Fire Service Institute, University of Illinois’s Department of Kinesiology and Community Health, and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health details the effects of increased SCBA weight on firefighters' physiological responses, work output, dynamic stability, and comfort. #ICYMI: Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell traveled to Southern California surveying the Vista and Lake wildfires and met with CAIIMTs 13 & 5. Orange County Fire Authority Station 41 Air Ops hosted the visit in the county’s new fire hawk helicopter; providing the opportunity to learn about air operations and new night vision goggle technology firsthand. Dr. Lori engaged SoCal firefighters, pilots, and Forest Service personnel about team dynamics, concerns and opportunities. While there, KABC provided an opportunity to discuss USFA’s new WUI fire awareness tools. https://lnkd.in/ex-488Aq Thank you Orange County Fire Authority, San Bernadino County Fire Department, Chief Brian Fennessy, and Chief Dan Munsey, MPA, EFO, CFO for your hospitality.

“Historically big change in policy, regulation, or human behavior only comes on the back of a tragic event. We have to become proactive. No-notice events doesn’t mean no-notice preparation. We must teach people to take individual actions to make themselves save-able in emergencies and in disasters.” - Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell Yesterday, U.S. Fire Administrator, Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, joined FEMA Administrator, Deanne Criswell, for the 49th Annual Natural Hazards Workshop in Broomfield, CO. They were joined by Brandy Bishop, Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and Michele Wood, California State University, Fullerton, for a panel on Changing the Message - Effective Communication in a Changing Climate. The panel discussed how to communicate with a public that is experiencing cascading and compounding disasters while possibly feeling mistrust in officials and shared lessons learned through government, tribal affairs and research.
