July 28th is #BuffaloSoldiersDay! 🇺🇸 Buffalo soldiers were African American soldiers who mainly served on the Western frontier following the American Civil War. They were originally members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments formed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. On September 21, 1866, six all-Black cavalry and infantry regiments were created after Congress passed the Army Organization Act. In #WWII, the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments were mostly disbanded, and the soldiers were moved into service-oriented units. This nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" was given to the Black Cavalry by Native American tribes who fought in the Indian Wars. The term eventually became synonymous with the African-American regiments formed in 1866. #ArmyHistory

The #USArmy Maneuver Support Center of Excellence hosted its first-ever Protection and Maneuver Support Senior Leader Forum this week at U.S. Army Fort Leonard Wood, bringing together senior leaders from across the US Army to discuss and better understand the array of equities and requirements that must be developed and integrated in support of the protection warfighting function. The theme across multiple senior leader remarks was that everyone plays a role in protection, and in line with that, each leader presented their thoughts from the various perspectives of their positions, from the need to continue recruiting and developing professional Soldiers to the importance of getting the best, most intuitive technology into those Soldiers’ hands. #VictoryStartsHere #TrainingModernization #StrengtheningTheProfession

76 years ago today, President Truman signed Executive Order 9981, desegregating the U.S. Armed Forces. Integration, which civil rights activists and special committees were slowly accomplishing despite persistent resistance, quickly became reality after the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950. In just five months, the US Army's size doubled. By mid-1951, more than 18 percent of African-Americans in the Army were serving in integrated or partially-integrated units. The change to integrated units was permanent, if limited. And most importantly, the integrated units were successful. Segregation officially ended in 1954 with the disbandment of the last all-black unit. #ArmyHistory
