Ruslan was forced to flee his home in Ukraine after the full-scale Russian invasion. He found safety in Budapest with his mother and father. Ruslan is just one of millions of people who have been forced to flee their homes because of the war. Since February 2022, more than 6.5 million people have fled from Ukraine, in addition to the more than 3.5 million who have been internally displaced inside the country. Today, the devastation continues. This week, deadly missiles hit multiple cities in Ukraine, including Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. Many people have already been confirmed dead with numbers still increasing. Buildings, like Kyiv’s Children’s Hospital Ohmatdyt, have sustained significant damage. These attacks highlight the ongoing severity of the full-scale war in Ukraine. We stand with the people of Ukraine and call for immediate respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians. 📸: © UNHCR/Zsolt Balla

Before reaching Morocco, Nidal and his wife experienced hardship in Syria and were forced to flee their home due to war. Before the conflict, they were both in school and were full of plans and dreams. Now, their main focus is to provide for their child with the life they couldn't have. Through resettlement and assistance from UNHCR, hope is beginning to look like a reality for the couple. Today, the couple consider themselves fortunate to still be with their family members, who also found safety in Morocco and live in the same area.

For the past thirty years, 53-year-old Daysi has lived in La Danta, a rural community on the border between El Salvador and Guatemala. In this community, she and her husband built their home and raised their family. Sadly, in 2023, her community was the epicenter of an earthquake, which caused Daysi to temporarily flee her home out of fear that it would collapse on top of her. During the emergency, Daysi and her family received humanitarian assistance from UNHCR, which provided them with a safe place to sleep and lighting. "These tents have helped my family when we had the earthquakes because they were afraid that their house would collapse. They also gave me some solar lamps that I continue to use," says Daysi. "Since the earthquakes started last year, it hasn't stopped, it was strong.” 📸: © UNHCR/Markel Redondo
