Uppsala Monitoring Centre promotes the safer use of medicines and vaccines for everyone everywhere
About us
Uppsala Monitoring Centre is a non-profit foundation and a centre for international service and scientific research in the field of pharmacovigilance. We advance the safety of patients by exploring and understanding the risks and benefits of medicines, with the ultimate aim of helping patients and physicians make wise therapeutic decisions. For more than 40 years, we have provided scientific leadership and operational support to the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring, expanding the global pharmacovigilance network to reach more than 95% of the world’s population. We create partnerships that bring together resources, expertise, and a shared vision of patient safety. Today, we continue to build a global drug safety culture by supporting and engaging all pharmacovigilance stakeholders, from national centres to regulators, academia and the pharma industry.

💉🌍 Vaccine safety monitoring, surveillance activities, and #PublicHealth communications continue to grow in Africa. Earlier this month, representatives from East and Southern African countries met in Johannesburg, South Africa, for a training session. UMC's Peter Hjelmstrom, Malin Jakobsson, and Sara Oliveira were pleased to attend and discuss using #VigiMobile to collect and manage safety data (ADRs and AEFIs). We were thrilled to meet colleagues during this 3-day meeting from immunisation and regulatory authorities, the World Health Organization, WHO AFRO, the African Vaccine Regulatory Forum (AVAREF), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Africa CDC, among other partners. We look forward to following the continued progress towards strengthening #pharmacovigilance systems in the region and beyond ✅ 📷 WHO

What factors influence the quality of adverse event reports submitted to #VigiBase? The completeness of adverse event reports is measured using the vigiGrade completeness score in VigiBase, the World Health Organization global database of adverse event reports for medicines and vaccines. In JMIR Publications Medical Informatics, UMC's Daniele Sartori and colleagues in Malaysia and Taiwan utilise machine learning and time-series analyses to determine the driving factors behind Malaysia's high vigiGrade completeness score. #Misinformation is still rife on the internet, with numerous websites providing unbalanced, misleading, and alarming information about #VaccineSafety. Finding reliable sources of trusted vaccine information that adhere to good information practices can be challenging for users. The Vaccine Safety Net project (VSN), a diverse global network of websites promoting credible and science-based information, aims to change that. For #UppsalaReports, Shanthi Pal and Xinyu Weng tell us more about the VSN and the work of the World Health Organization to ensure scientifically accurate vaccine safety information reaches people from all walks of life👇

The use of natural products and herbal medicines is engrained in many cultures. Yet awareness of their safe use, or #phytovigilance, is severely lacking in #healthcare. Mohamed A. Elhawary and Hadir Rostom outline how the ISoP Egypt Chapter created an outreach proposal centred on sharing information, experiences, and anecdotes of the safety of herbals. Get the full story in #UppsalaReports👇
