We applaud the work companies like Biote are doing to normalize the conversation around menopause. In this article, Terry Weber paints the picture of a woman in mid-life whose menopausal symptoms cause her to retire early, helping to increase awareness around how menopause affects women in the workforce. Let’s take the conversation once step further and offer menopause care and treatment to all female employees? If you are interested in partnering with Upliv Health to give your employees comprehensive menopause support, click here to learn more: https://lnkd.in/emYUykYi “I realized that if my own employee felt too embarrassed to discuss menopause and to ask for options, how many other women must feel the same way and have nowhere to turn? How many women just opt to leave the workforce? The short answer is … a lot.” https://lnkd.in/gmXmSBUD

A great read detailing how menopause affects working women as well as employers, while also shedding light on how employers can provide more support for women navigating this stage of life. Menopausal symptoms affect about 25% of the U.S. working population, and a recent study by the Mayo Clinic found that 13% reported having at least one adverse work outcome due to menopause symptoms in the past year. How does this impact employers? Adverse work outcomes include missed working days, reduced hours, being laid off or even quitting — not to mention the DEI impact of losing female employees in or working towards leadership positions. The problem of unaddressed menopause has materialized as a result of two major reasons. First, symptoms are frequently not adequately treated by traditional medical care — as an example, only 7% of medical residents training in family medicine, internal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology said they feel adequately prepared to help female patients manage menopause. Secondly, women feel a stigma around discussing menopause at work and in their personal life. The combination of the two leaves women feeling they are on their own. 15% of large organizations indicated they are offering or plan to offer benefits intended to help menopausal women experiencing — up from just 4% last year. What happens when employers prioritize access to menopause care? An estimated 1.3 million women in the U.S. will reach menopause each year – meaning, 20% of the U.S. workforce is in some stage of menopause. Only 15% of these women will receive tailored treatment. Hot flashes have become the symptom we associate with menopause – but, menopause also causes disrupted sleep, brain fog, depression, anxiety, joint and muscle aches, unexplained weight changes, painful sex, period irregularities, mood changes, and many other symptoms that negatively impact a woman’s professional and personal quality of life. Not to mention that menopause lasts from 7 to 14 years, so dealing with these side effects without adequate health support is no easy feat. But…what is the impact to businesses when women have access to adequate and comprehensive menopause care? 1. Reduced Absenteeism: 18% of women take off more than 8 weeks in extended leave due to unaddressed menopause symptoms 2. Reduced medical costs: Women experiencing menopause pay 47% more annually compared to the total population 3. Greater retention of senior women: Even women who reported just one disruptive menopausal symptom were 43 percent more likely to have left their jobs by the age of 55. This is particular critical when women still only hold ~32% of top executive positions across industries 4. Reduced turnover costs: Organizations that prevent turnover due to menopause save on replacement costs which can be up to 200% of a leaving employee’s salary 5. Enhanced recruitment of female employees: 50% of women report that a company’s practices in diversity and inclusion are “very important” when they’re weighing a job offer, which includes demonstrated support of female leadership 6. Progress towards gender parity: Companies that succeed in retaining senior female leadership and attracting new female talent make significant progress in closing gender gaps, fostering a more equal and diverse workforce Upliv Health is driven by its mission to increase the accessibility of specialized menopause care, and we're proud to work with forward-leaning employers who prioritize the health of their menopausal employees.
