The crux of community development lies in education. United Way NCA champions the cause of ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) middle and high school students, ensuring they transition smoothly from education to career. Did you know? Across the National Capital Area, 48% of students enrolled in K-12 schools are economically disadvantaged, negatively impacting overall attendance and, ultimately, high-school graduation rates. In DC in 2022, 29% of all households with children are below the ALICE threshold (earning more than the Federal Poverty Level but less than the basic cost of living for the county/state in which they live). In a world with escalating dropout rates, interventions can be the pivot point.
