This past weekend, United Way of New York City concluded the incredible Black Studies: An Education for Me + You Bookmobile tour at Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City 2024! 📚🚌 The transformative experience of the Black Studies Bookmobile sparks curiosity and celebrates the vibrant tapestry of Black voices, experiences, and legacies. After going through the bus, young learners, families, and visitors picked out free books by Black authors, illustrators, and stories to take home. This final Bookmobile stop included a focus on the San Juan Hill neighborhood, home to the largest Black population in New York City in the early 1900s, and a conversation with artist Kamau Ware, creator of the digital comic Buffalo Sonnet. Thank you to our Women United volunteers for your support in making the final stop of the #BlackStudiesBookmobile a success. We are grateful to your dedication in uplifting our communities and supporting our work to make education and literacy more accessible for all. #FlashbackFriday We had a ball at Barclays Center last month, cheering on the New York Liberty with our incredible supporters. 🏀 KKR generously hosted us in their box, where we gathered with partners and friends to watch the stars of the #WNBA in action. Our afternoon included thoughtful discussions about the challenges of achieving pay equity for women across all professions. National Grid treated our team to another exciting game, where we witnessed the Liberty face off against the Chicago Sky in a thrilling matchup. On #Juneteenth, we celebrate emancipation and the journey toward freedom, honoring the resilience of those who led the way. Our work continues, focusing on building an equitable, just, and healthy New York City.

We stand with City Harvest NYC, Food Bank For New York City and over 250 organizations to deliver a critical message:  Mayor Adams’ Executive Budget proposal includes a 50% cut to Community Food Connection’s (CFC) allocation. As NYC’s primary program for delivering much-needed food to soup kitchens and food pantries, CFC is a lifeline to New Yorkers in need. Visits to these soup kitchens and food pantries have increased by an alarming 80% since the pandemic, with the largest surge coming from families with children. With such high demand, cutting CFC funding is simply not an option; we must fortify it. As the FY25 budget is finalized, we urge the Mayor to prioritize the basic food needs of New Yorkers by establishing a baseline funding of $60 million for CFC. Every dollar invested in food assistance amplifies the health, stability, and economic resilience of our communities.
