In discussions of wide-ranging topics during the last day of the Aspen Security Forum, experts particularly noted the continued threat posed by Russia regardless of the outcome of its invasion of Ukraine. U.S. Army Gen. Christopher Cavoli, head of U.S. European Command and the supreme allied commander for NATO, said the Russian war in Ukraine will not be the end of Russia's threat to Europe or even the United States. "The outcome on the ground is terribly, terribly important," Cavoli said at a panel discussion with top European leaders. "But we can't be under any illusions. At the end of a conflict in Ukraine, however it concludes, we are going to have a very, very big Russia problem. ... We are going to have a situation where Russia is reconstituting its force, is located on the borders of NATO, is led by largely the same people as it is right now, is convinced that we're the adversary, and is very, very angry." https://lnkd.in/etMh7tej

Can environmental cooperation be a potential path to open engagement with tightly controlled North Korea? At the recent 6th Mongolia Forum on Northeast Asia Peaceful Development and Korean Unification, a seed of an idea was planted: tree planting as a way to help address both inter-Korean issues and the notable desertification that has affected the region. https://lnkd.in/eJ3ePpDY

In looking at federal LGBTQ+ protections under President Joe Biden and under former President Donald Trump, a Human Rights Campaign report released on Friday found what it called a "stark contrast" between the two presidential candidates. "Actions have consequences. Time and again, the Trump administration ushered in policies and positions that did damage to LGBTQ+ lives,” said Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson. "Meanwhile, in their first term, the Biden-Harris Administration has taken steps to make our lives better.” https://lnkd.in/eHBgGKSg

NASA's central data office, known as Building 12, will be renamed as the "Dorothy Vaughan Center in Honor of the Women of Apollo" as a "tribute to the people who made humanity's first steps on the Moon possible.” Vaughan was an expert FORTRAN programmer, and she also contributed to the Scout Launch Vehicle Program. She retired in 1971 and died in 2008. "As we prepare to return to the moon for long-term science and exploration, NASA's Artemis missions will land the first woman and first person of color on the moon. It's a privilege to dedicate Johnson's Building 12 to the innovative women who laid the foundation to our nation's space program." https://lnkd.in/ewv3r3Ni

For gay individuals, coming out can cover a range of unique emotions from trepidation to excitement and beyond. Unfortunately for many gay youth, those emotions also can include the fear of being outed before they are ready to be open about who they are. This week, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation making his state the first one in the nation to prohibit schools from outing transgender students to their parents. The Democratic governor signed Assembly Bill 1955, better known as the SAFTEY Act, on Monday. https://lnkd.in/eSt2DeBZ

Despite having issues with helium leaks and thrusters, Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is a trustworthy one, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams said during a press interview conducted in low-Earth orbit on Wednesday. The astronauts and the Starliner vehicle should return to Earth from the International Space Station after more thruster testing wraps up at NASA’s New Mexico testing site. https://lnkd.in/eVBAFUK9
